QUESTION 4

In a private college, 68% of the students are full time students, 23% are part-time students
and the balance are 'flexible learning' students. From past records, the percentage of
students who fail to graduate among the full time students, part-time students and 'flexible
learning' students are 7%, 15% and 23%, respectively.

a) Draw a tree diagram to show the probabilities.

(4 marks)

b) What is the probability that a randomly selected student will fail to graduate?
(4 marks)

c) What is the probability that a randomly selected student is a part-time student, given
that the student fails to graduate?

QUESTION 5

X is the random variable representing the number of A's obtained by the students in a rural
school. The probability distribution of the random variable X is given below.

X=x 0 1 2 3 4 5
P(X=x) 0.31 0.12 0.20 0.25 0.07 0.05

a) If 200 students took the examination, how many students obtained 3 A's?
(2 marks)

b) If the students who obtained 5 A's are to be given the awards for excellence, how
many students will receive the awards if 200 students took the examination?
(2 marks)

c) A student is randomly selected from those who sat for the examination. What is the
probability that the student obtained less than 3 A's?
(2 marks)

d) Find E(X) and E(2X - 3).
