A report on the March gathering.

We had another excellent evening of music at Bijou with plenty of sitters-in, who included our special guests the two Dans from Foulds Music, Derby. I made a photographic record of the evening's performers as a reminder when it came to writing this report, but unfortunately my new phone packed in before I could download the photos! So the following is based on what I can remember: Brian Lewis started the evening off with some of his impeccable solo playing. John Gracie was up next accompanied by myself and we played "Manha De Carnival" and "Laura". Charles Howorth then joined me to play two jazz standards, "Out Of Nowhere" and "I Thought About You". Whilst I was in the accompanying mode, Rob Day ventured on stage to play two tunes that we had not rehearsed, "One Note Samba" and "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life", and considering that Rob is new to jazz, it went rather well. The two Dans were up next with a collection of beautifully played standards. It's been a while since the two Dans were with us, great to see them back. Kev Taylor-Cox and Keith Eagling teamed up and found a couple of numbers they had in common, one of which was Jobim's "Wave". The evening continued with a few jazz standards by Ray Brooker and Tony Cordes and they played "Mitch's Lament", a tune composed by Herb Ellis, "The Nearness Of You" and "Sunny Side Of The Street". Next was Guy Boden, accompanied by myself, and we played "Lady Bird" and George Benson's "Breezin". A newcomer to the club, "Dave", who played a Maccaferri type guitar entertained us with a couple of Django numbers. Ian Weir then joined me and played "Satin Doll" and "Autumn Leaves". The two Dans then took the stage to finish the evening off. Some great music and a very varied programme were enjoyed by all. The above is from memory with some help from Tony Cordes. PAT MARTINO'S GUITARS

PART ONE.
If you are a Martino fan you will have noticed from album sleeves that he played several different guitars. It seems like all we jazz guitarists he was experimenting with guitars as he was going through different stages of development in his playing. Do we ever stop? Pat started playing the guitar at an early age influenced by his father, (Mickey), and as he was small in stature he used a Gibson Les Paul. See photo.

At the age of seventeen he was gigging seven sets a night seven days a week. Having finished a stint at the Showboat, Harlem, with saxophonist Jack McDuff, he was en rout to Chicago their band wagon was stolen with all the instruments. When they got to Chicago Jack McDuff took the seventeen year old to a pawn shop and purchased a cheap guitar. In fact, according to Pat, he had to use matchsticks to hold the pickup in place to stop it falling into the guitar. He used it for one night. The following day he called home and borrowed some money from his family and purchased a Gibson E175CES.

From that point he began to use archtop guitars. Pat recollects that it was quite a transition from solid guitars. He then got serious about archtop guitars and adjusted to the instrument and its physical demands. He went from the ES175 to a Gibson

Johnny Smith pictured on the front cover of "EL Hombre", his first album as leader. Circa 1967. Pat was heavily influnced by the legendary guitarist Johnny Smith during his early years as he copied everything that Johnny had recorded at that time in the 50's. His party piece was "Moonlight in Vermont". Apparently, his father said to him one day " If Johnny Smith stopped recording what would you do". He wanted Pat to find his own voice. So we can understand why he went for the Johnny Smith model, like many of us. Pat recollects that he had a lot of trouble with the JS model when he began playing with louder bands. The problem was the way the Smith was strutted and the floating pick up. He used to stuff the guitar with all kinds of sheets and taped the F holes which basically turned it into a solid body. Pat then moved on to a Gibson L5CES which has two built in pick ups. This guitar is pictured on the cover of his second album as leader "Strings", and on the cover of "Baiyina" which he recorded in 1968.

He was then approached by luthier Sam Koontz who, as a form of respect, asked if he could build him a guitar. The Koontz was an archtop guitar with an oval sound hole very much like the Gibson Howard Roberts model and was fitted with a floating DeArmond pickup. The Koontz had a door that would slide over the oval hole which would reduce feedback. Pat used this guitar on three of his albums - "The Visit", "Live" and "Conciousness". On a personal note, I had a Koontz guitar for a few years and one major characteristic was the very thick carved top which also helps to reduce feedback. After selling my Koontz in The States it was eventually purchased by Howard Krive, a U S guitarist who had a collection of Koontz guitars. He sadly passed away in 2008. Check out this link, my old guitar is on the extreme right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uhuYvvbkQ4 Also in the early 70's Pat recorded "Desperado", using a 12 string guitar on all the tracks. The guitar was a Univox that looks like an ES335. It was another pawn shop instrument and was bought as a gift by his wife. It cost $80. Pat re-strung the guitar with unison on the first, second, third and fourth strings and left the fifth and sixth as single strings. That amount of pressure caused the neck to bend and when he came

to record "Desperado" the strings were 1/4" off the fingerboard. He only used that guitar once for the session! To be continued.

This is a beautiful road worn Mexican tele with a twist. It has a Seymour Duncan SH-2 Humbucker in the neck. This is a lower output and beautifully matched with the Tex Mex Bridge. The pickguard has been changed for a blackguard style Brass compensated Joe Barden saddles and it has a 50s Gil Elvgren decal added to body (which could be removed if desired by soapy water and a non scratch scourer) the whole guitar is suitably aged. Complete with Kinman case. The modifications and pro set up were carried out by a pro luthier (Xperience guitars).
