APPLYING EGALITARIAN APPROACH IN COMMUNICATION Introduction

Egalitarianism covers a trend or fashion of thoughts that favor notions or ideas of equality among living things. According to the doctrines of egalitarianism, humans have equal, fundamental status and worth within a society. Egalitarianism is held by the cultural theories of risk as an idea that has negative attitudes targeted at principles and rules, and positive attributes aimed at group decision making. Egalitarianism dictates that all individuals within a community, organization or jurisdiction should be treated as they have equal civil, political and economic rights. Egalitarianism occurs as a rule that advocates for the removal of economic or privilege inequality among individuals, or the tendencies for the decentralization of power. Essentially, egalitarianism indicates that equality should be a reflection of the expected state of humanity (Moss, 2009). Within my organization, serious financial problems need to be addressed. The organization has identified layoffs as the best route towards the management of the financial issues facing the organization. I know that the planned layoffs will impact on my department, which I manage. Therefore, in this case, the analysis will be on the application of egalitarian approaches in ethical decision making, in the face of the financial and personal issues within the company. An application of the egalitarian approach to respond to the anxieties of an employee I used to supervise before my appointment to the management will consider the equality and magnitude of the situation. It is unethical to disclose company information before announcements have been released, or plans have been placed on how to disclose the information (Moss, 2009). Despite this fact, I would consider the anxieties that the employee is facing, and try to give a comforting response that has its basis on the requirements of an egalitarian approach. Therefore, the approach would be, it is, in the best interests of the

whole company, and favoritism will not be a condition for deciding the individuals to be laid off. I also hope you recognize that I do not have information on the departments to be affected by the layoffs. I do not see a need for worry because you have been carrying out your duties as stipulated and the company would not wish to layoff hardworking staff. The advantage of egalitarian approach in ethical decision making lies in its emphasis on equality. Egalitarian approaches dictate that individuals affected by any decision have equal opportunities that arise from the decision. This means that individuals in egalitarian context have equal access to economic, education and medical opportunities among others. The disadvantage of the egalitarian approach in ethical decision-making is its emphasis on the involvement of nearly everybody within the organization. This implies that the organization may lack a well defined leadership in such an environment. This has a probability of causing confusion over who holds the overall leadership in the company (Moss, 2009). The application of egalitarian approaches in decision making provides challenges in the companys abilities to respond and take decisive actions. Conclusion In my opinion, egalitarian approaches, with effective leadership offer appropriate and unrivaled environments for ethical decision making within an organization. These approaches give individuals an opportunity to express their opinions and be integrated in the decision formulation process. It also places immense emphasis on equality and the equal availability of chance for individuals. For instance in the medical field, the egalitarian approach can be applied to ensure that every citizen has access to medical care. This will ensure that regulations are
