Running head: ARE PREBIOTICS AND PROBIOTICS BENEFICIAL OR NOT? Are prebiotics and probiotics beneficial or not?

A review article by Wallace et al. (2011) summarizes a considerable body of research on interaction between prebiotics and probiotics with the human gut microbiota and the subsequent outcome for the patients health. The review article Human Gut Microbiota and its Relationship to Health and Disease contains a summary of research concerning the effect of prebiotics and probiotics on human health and a range of the relevant implication. The studys aim consists in providing a comprehensive overview of the existing research on the topic, including evidence-based scientific facts, an overview of actual application methodology, and guidelines for practitioners. The authors conclude that there are many benefits to using prebiotics and probiotics in treatment of certain disorders, which potentially can be even greater, though further research is required. They also highlight the need to assess the optimum mode of their intake and find ways to achieve greater safety. Taking into consideration data presented in the review article, I think that probiotics and prebiotics can enhance well-being of patients with certain disorders. There are many facts supporting this opinion. They can affect the GI tract and immune system in positive ways. However, there are still multiple concerns about consumption of prebiotics and probiotics. Firstly, their impact is individualized and has to be assessed per specific patient. Secondly, there are serious side effects. Finally, there are no established rules of their application. In my opinion, consumption of prebiotics and probiotics can be promoted in nutritional practice, but with great caution. It is critical to evaluate the patients state thoroughly by collecting as much information as possible before prescribing them. There are certain risk groups for whom use of prebiotics and probiotics should be restricted. It is obvious that further research of the topic is imperative.

ARE PREBIOTICS AND PROBIOTICS BENEFICIAL OR NOT?

There is clear evidence pro use of prebiotics and probiotics in treatment of certain disorders; yet, undoubtedly, there is an urgent need to further research the subject, as the issue is accompanied by a number of acute concerns.
