Warm-up

The Olympian Crown

We define tangent as a line that touches a curve, how can this be applied in a real-life situation? Create your own problem including the use of a tangent line.

1. Below is a picture of a tangent line, your job is to create a new circle, then place a point outside of the circle anywhere you would like, next draw a tangent line to the circle from the point you just drew.

2. Lets see how we can apply this to a crown that is awarded the winners of the Olympics. Look at the picture below, locate and circle the tangent line.

Draw four tangent lines on the circle on the right. Then draw leaves on the lines in hopes to look like an ancient Olympian crown.

Directions To Create Your Own Crown

The idea behind the crowns is to share our creativity and show our support to our fellow Olympians. One person in each group with create a gold crown, one will make the silver, one will create the bronze, and one will make a general crown with no added colors. Step one: Select the crown you will create, write it here: _________________________ Step two: Using a piece of brown construction paper, cut 2 THREE inch strips. Step three: Tape or staple the two strips together, end-to-end, to create one long strip. Step four: Wrap the strip around your head and TAPE the strip so it fits your head, possibly make it a little bigger incase the winner who receives this crown has a different shaped head. Step five: Cut many, (up to 25), green leaves out of the green construction paper. Glue these leaves onto your crown (as shown below)

Step six: Depending on your crown, the gold crowns need to glue a gold ribbon around the top (see Ms. Johnsons example), the silver will do the same but with the silver ribbon, as well as the bronze. Those who are making a general crown (which will go to everyone who did not place in the gold, silver, or bronze spots during the Olympic Day) will add a ribbon around the top that is shiny-green. Step seven: Write your name inside the crown with a Good job! or any type of quote of encouragement.

Lesson Plan for The Olympian Crown

Unit: Circles Grade: 10th Grade Geometry Objective: Students will be able to identify and make a tangent line from a point outside of a circle to the circle. Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.C.A.4 Construct a tangent line from a point outside a given circle to the circle. Anticipatory Set: Students will engage in a warm-up activity (first page of the handout) that will ask them to state the definition of a tangent line. They will then relate this to a real-life situation in which they create themselves. Students will gain a great understanding of what tangent lines are before they are asked to draw and locate them. I will be able to assess their understanding of tangent lines through the class discussion after they complete the warm-up. Tasks: 1. Students will complete the warm-up individually, then discuss the answers as a class 2. Students will complete problems 1 and 2 on their own then discuss their answers with their collaborative groups 3. Collaborative groups will work together for the rest of the class period 4. Students will be able to share their answers to questions 1 and 2 and move on to the crown activity 5. Students will complete the crown activity within their groups and will be required to turn them in at the end of the hour 6. The last five minutes will be devoted to reflecting on todays lesson and addressing any misconceptions related to tangent lines Assessment Strategies: the warm-up activity will be a way for me to see what students already know about tangent lines and if they can apply them to a real-life problem while students work in groups and alone I will be circulating the classroom checking for understanding by asking open-ended questions to assist students the final reflection will take place, this will allow me to finalize my ideas about what will come next for my students and this unit

Closure: To end the lesson I will ask, What was one piece for you that was new today? Where is a tangent line located? How many tangent lines can I draw on a circle? And, why is the answer infinity?
