JOB TITLE: Regional Officer, South of England

REPORTING TO: Manager of Regional Programmes

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No staff

BASED: British Science Association, Wellcome Wolfson Building,


165 Queen's Gate, London SW7 5HD

TERMS: Full Time 35 hours per week, permanent contract

SALARY: £21,000 - £26,000 per annum depending on successful


fundraising experience

Overall Purpose of the job

The full time postholder for the Regional Officer (RO) for the South of England will support
and work with the current nine British Science Association Branches in the region to help
recruit and induct new volunteers, develop links with other local organisations and enable
the volunteers to form a sustainable committee and engaging public events programmes.
In addition to Branch support, the postholder will act to raise awareness of the Association
in the region, including the promotion of National Science and Engineering Week and
other programmes, and coordinate fundraising activity across the regional team.

The post will be based at the Wellcome Wolfson Building in South Kensington, London,
although there is a small possibility the RO location may change in the future. A significant
amount of travel around the South of England will be required.

Key Responsibilities for this role

• Working with the British Science Association Branches to identify their support needs
and put plans into place to meet these

• Encouraging the Branches to try new methods of public engagement and aim at
reaching new audiences

• Creating and implementing a strategy for recruiting new branch members and
supporting the development of new Branches

• Maintaining regular communication links between Head Office and the Branches,
including securing information from Branches for quarterly reports to Council and
consulting on new Association policies

• Ensuring that web pages for the South of England Branches are fresh and up-to-date

• Providing up-to-date information on regional activity, Branch or otherwise, to


supporters via e-newsletters

• Encouraging participation in National Science and Engineering Week by


disseminating information to contacts in the area, organising regional information
sessions and helping with any other events for the project in conjunction with central
office

• Acting as an ambassador for the British Science Association, building networks of


contacts to stimulate opportunities for collaborative branch projects and to raise
awareness and participation in Association programmes, including a visible role in any
regional ‘Science Alliance’

Coordination of fundraising activity across the regional team, including the production
of grant applications, sponsorship or other funding proposals to support regional or
national Branch events or projects.

• Other tasks as reasonably required by the Manager or the Director of Programmes

Key working relationships

The post holder will be expected to liaise with colleagues across the organisation and
have a good working knowledge of all of the British Science Association’s programmes.
The South of England Regional Officer will work particularly closely with the other regional
officers and will spend a significant amount of time sharing experience and best practice
with these colleagues via virtual and actual meetings.

The successful candidate will also be likely to develop significant working relationships with
the following people:

• Manager of Regional Programmes


• Regional Programmes Officer
• National Science and Engineering Week Officer
• Supporter Development Team
• Fundraising Team
• Members of the Branches

Person Specification

Essential:

The successful candidate will:

• Be a self starter, able to work on their own initiative


• Be an effective communicator with excellent written and verbal skills
• Be able to coordinate projects effectively
• Be highly organised with the ability to manage your time successfully
• Have the ability to build relationships and networks with external organisations and
individuals at all levels
• Have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to adapt to and influence social situations
• Have experience of successful fundraising with Trusts and/or companies
• Be computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office packages
• Be willing to travel throughout the South of England
• Have an interest in and be knowledgeable about science communication and/or
working with volunteers

Desirable:

In addition, it is preferable although not essential that the successful candidate will be
able to demonstrate:

• Have experience of supporting volunteers


• Have experience of working with committees
• Knowledge of web editing

Terms and conditions

The position is offered at a salary of £21,000 to £26,000 per year depending on successful
fundraising experience.

Applicants should note that hours during the British Science Festival, held every year in
September, may be particularly demanding.

The Association offers a number of benefits to employees who complete three months
service and probationary period, including a contributory pension scheme and an interest
