Name of the Rich Performance Task: Reptiles and Anishinabe Myths

Big Idea: Reptiles have many characteristics including their variety of methods to defend themselves from dangerous situations CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS Overall Expectation Demonstrate an understanding that animals grow and change and have distinct characteristics Specific Expectations Students will: Observe and compare the physical characteristics and the behavioural characteristics of a variety of animals
Accommodations

Some students may need the following in the KWL activity: Increase time or quiet space
Modifications

(ESL students): Read a picture book when other students are engaged in writing activities
Materials required:

Handout A and Handout B (1 per student), pencil Chart paper Projector, computer Examine student work on handout to assess if students have successfully applied scientific knowledge Using a checklist, confirm if students are using proper terminology orally or in written form (migration, local/seasonal...)

Assessment Tool(s):

Procedure of Task: GETTING STARTED 10 minutes HOOK (5 min) Have students pantomime ie: slither like a snake, chomp like a crocodile, move like a really slow turtle, move your arms like a lizard, stick out your tongues like a snake (5min) List different types of reptiles (lizard, turtle...) and ask for examples; have students come up and draw picture on chart paper WORKING ON IT during 40 minutes (5 min) Complete KWL of reptiles individually at desk. Meanwhile read reptiles book to ESL students (5 min) GLUE onto chart paper (separated by KNOW and QUESTIONS) and share. Add to the chart they are cold-blooded they are covered in scales Why do reptiles need scales? (to protect their bodies) What does cold-blooded mean? (Being cold-blooded means that reptiles react to the temperature of their surroundings. When they get too warm, they can go into the water or shade to cool off) (10 min) Share the Anishnabe legend of how the turtle gets its shell. Discuss as a class why a turtle might need its shell. Write a sentence describing the reptile and its defense mechanism. REFLECTING AND CONNECTING part 3 after 10 minutes In a sharing circle, have students share their creations briefly.
