Monday 4/14 - Monday 4/21 Alka-Seltzer Rocket Project Main Activity: Assignment 5.4 and 5.

5 Scientific Practice: Planning and carrying out investigations Constructing scientific explanations Analyzing and Interpreting Data Michigan Objective: C1.1C Conduct scientific investigations using appropriate tools and techniques Literacy will be incorporated in the classroom by having the students draw the steps of the procedure. Student Objectives: The students will be able to read a procedure and then draw the steps of the procedure. Once they draw the procedure, they will be able to perform the experiment, following the procedure. The students will plan an investigation and test their hypothesis. The students will be able to form a scientific explanation using a claim, evidence and reasoning. Connection: The students are familiar with rockets and are able to make their own rockets in class. Materials: Film canisters, copies of Assignment 5.4, copies of Assignment 5.5, water, 118 alka-seltzers, 2 launch pads, goggles, graduated cylinders, morter and pestle, tape measures Monday - 4/14 Intro - 10 minutes Check for ID, pencil, calculator, (on-time) Take Attendance Welcome students back from Spring Break Ask students to find a partner (or group of 3) Pass back misc. papers Introduce Project- 10 minutes Introduce Project Discuss Alka-Seltzer and how it is made of dried citric acid, aspirin and sodium bicarbonate. When you add water the tablet dissolves - allowing the reaction between these ingredients. Demo the experiment When the reaction happens, carbon dioxide is produced. As the carbon dioxide is produced the gas fills the film container, the pressure from the gas pops the top off. Pass out Assignment 5.4 Read over Assignment 5.4 as a class Assignment 5.4 - 39 minutes Students will read over the general procedure and make a storyboard for the procedure. The students will have to draw pictures of the steps of the procedure. They cannot move onto the experiment until they get their story-board approved. IF Additional Time Students will perform the experiment and will measure the distance the rocket travels - this will be their control. Tuesday - 4/15 Intro - 6 minutes Check for ID, pencil, calculator Take Attendance Introduce Scientific Explanations - 23 minutes Introduce Claim, Evidence and Reasoning Demonstrate/Model how to write a scientific explanation o Claim - what you know o Evidence - how you know that o Reasoning - why does your evidence support your claim Provide claims and determine if they are acceptable!

Experiment - 30 minutes Once students have their hypothesis written, they will test their hypothesis. They will measure the distance traveled and determine if their hypothesis was correct. The students will practice writing a scientific explanation using their data from their experiment Students will test an additional hypothesis to try to find the method that launches the rocket the farthest Students will clean up the testing area and equipment Wednesday - 4/15 Intro - 6 minutes Check for ID, pencil, calculator Take Attendance Practice Scientific Explanations - 10 minutes Using Ms. Merk's results, practice writing a claim, an evidence statement and a reasoning statement as a class Discuss Reproducibility of Experiments - 8 minutes In an ideal situation, once we add the water and alka-seltzer it will take us the exact same amount of time to get the lid on the canister. In an ideal situation, the canisters will all be IDENTICAL Averaging 3 trials is better than using the results from 1 trail Experiments - 35 minutes Once students have their hypothesis written, they will test their hypothesis. They will measure the distance traveled and determine if their hypothesis was correct. The students will practice writing a scientific explanation Students will clean up the testing area and equipment Thursday - 4/17 Intro - 9 minutes Check for ID, pencil, calculator Take Attendance Write down list of materials needed for outside Prepare to Go Outside - 10 minutes Get materials together, tablets (crushed, broken, whole?), goggles, water (warm, room temp? - make sure you have enough), film canister & lid, Assignment 5.5, Book/Binder/Surface to write on, Pencil/Pen, Graduated Cylinder Trials - 35 minutes Students will continue running trials, writing hypotheses, and writing scientific explanations Clean-up - 5 minutes Students will head back inside to clean up their equipment Friday - 4/18 - No School Monday 4/21 Intro - 9 minutes Check for ID, pencil, calculator Take Attendance Write down list of materials needed for outside Prepare to Go Outside - 10 minutes Get materials together, tablets (crushed, broken, whole?), goggles, water (warm, room temp? - make sure you have enough), film canister & lid, Assignment 5.5, Book/Binder/Surface to write on, Pencil/Pen, Graduated Cylinder Competition - 30 minutes Students will use their "best procedure" to compete against their classmates and have their rocket travel the most.

Clean up - 5 minutes Introduce Homework - 5 minutes Students must have Assignment 5.5 completed when the walk in the door the following day
