A Proposal for IIT Roorkee Auroville - The City the Earth Needs Auroville based 6day Holistic Sustainability

Learning Programme Involving exposure to all integrated aspects of making of an Inclusive Society & finding out what makes it a worldwide leading example of Applied Research in Sustainable Campus Planning, Technologies & Integral Living

Similar programme has been experienced by many students from different institutions in India & abroad in recent. For reference purposes, full details of the programme and photo album of all visits and learning activities can be seen at 'Holistic Sustainability Programme' for CEPT Planning (UG) Students, December 2012, Auroville Present times require to develop & instill very comprehensive & inclusive understanding of Integral Sustainability. It requires a fine balance & lots of in-depth preparation to develop sound understanding of fundamentals of involved subjects and issues as well as keeping oneself updated with emerging aspects & related issues. Sustainability in this context could broadly be described one such very important and relevant area of integral study which is fast becoming mainstream both in academic arena as well as in practice within India and elsewhere in the world. While different institutions in India are attempting to impart education in Sustainability & its involved themes & issues, it is still in very initial stage and there is vast scope & need to build a more inclusive and appropriate understanding of this topic among the students while in college so that after their study years they are well equipped with understanding of essence of sustainability, its components, tools, process and techniques & ready to play the key role of creative integrator & thus making significant and meaningful contribution to society via their varied forms of works & derive creative satisfaction. In this context, Auroville comes across as a lighthouse of integrated learning of Integrated Sustainability & Holistic development with a vision & goal of creation of Inclusive Society. Students and researchers from India and all over the world have been coming to Auroville to get firsthand experience of variety of experiments in order to take their understanding to another level. This proposal is a special effort to further strengthen the already and informally existing learning opportunities in some better defined & facilitated way via some of the below mentioned options and learning possibilities. Programme Objective To provide a stimulating learning opportunity & environment for students in Aurovilles creative & interdisciplinary atmosphere in order to enhance the comprehensive learning possibilities of participants at both macro & micro levels within the interconnected & wider domain of Integral Sustainability. What this designed programme is envisioned to contribute to ones learning in holistic manner 1. Awareness about self & exploration of how does one learn? 2. Awareness about living environment & role of self; as individual & professional in society & changing times. 3. Act as a Refreshing, re-orientation, stress free & open minded learning experience which can help bring much needed enthusiasm, focus & sustained interest & energy to design & follow ones own paths ahead. 4. To have firsthand & direct opportunity to learn from live case study to understand the Integral living experiment of Auroville which is world over regarded as very inspiring, functioning, creative & full of learning potential of interdisciplinary research and leading sustainable practices.

5. To experience one of the most special & highly successful example of ecological & environmental oriented developments & careful use & re-use of natural & other resources 6. To study & visit some of the leading examples & experiments in Sustainable Architecture & Planning & getting a chance to explore developing holistic perspective towards Integrated Sustainable Design & Development from a deeper & more truer perspective rather to be guided by superficial & fashionable use of fragmented understanding of word Sustainability. Very important for young students to have appropriate orientation of Integral Sustainability at early stage in their academic carrier. 7. To have an orientation & vision of an Inclusive Society & Sustainable Campus in 21st Century so that its components, scale and links of Sustainability are explored & understood in an all-round, interconnected & comprehensive manner & are not getting limited to narrow approach to the subject as is the case most often now a days. 8. Via hands on & solution finding workshops, exploring & learning about the importance & tools for successful collaborative team works, developing skill & capacity to deal with diverse perceptions & differing views with an aim to find a higher common synthesis. 9. Orientation about how emerging new age productivity tools via use of ICT (Information & Communication Technology) could assist one for better work output & organisational capacity. 10. Ultimately, to further enhance the sensitivity of young students towards Holistic Learning & giving them a subtle as well as energetic experience so that they can creatively and enthusiastically work towards Sustainable Living for all. 11. This programme via inspiring and thought provoking examples would certainly assist students positively to re-think & evaluate their approach towards their academic & professional carriers in positive manner & shape up their future directions in rapidly changing times. How is this learning exchange planned Presentations by Auroville resource persons who are engaged in wide ranging research & activities Site Visits to have firsthand experience & interaction to identified activities, buildings, communities Workshops of half to one full day duration on 1 or 2 topics to apply learnings from Auroville & environs Documentation of identified activities, areas, communities to understand how diversity & innovations has been shaping up in Auroville via growth of different communities, activities, services & infrastructure etc.

Visit to Pondicherry would also be arranged as a part of this programme.

A short note on Institute Coordinator Lalit Bhati, an Urban Planner from CEPT, has been living & taking active
part in Aurovilles planning & development activity since last 13 years and worked as a team member on formulation of Aurovilles Master Plan. He has been following his keen interest in the field of learning from Auroville via organizing various national & international learning programmes and students study visits to Auroville. He has taught short course on Planning and Design of Sustainable Cities at IIT Roorkee and conducted Holistic Sustainability Workshops in over 15 Architecture & Planning Institutes in India in last two years. He is actively engaged with academic and professional activities within India and abroad & recently acted as a Guest Editor of Research Journal The sustainability in Architecture and Infrastructure Development, June 2012 edition, Chandigarh College of Architecture. Presented Aurovilles case study in various national & international events, forums. Published an Article in Times of India (Chennai
edition) in June 2011 on Sustainable Campus Designs. Jury member during annual National Association of Students of Architecture, NASA India meet in 2009 & 2010. Designed and organised a 40 panel exhibition on Evolution of Planning in Auroville & Evolution of Cities in the world, in association with CEPT, Ahmedabad, Vastu Shilp Foundation & Artes, Chennai, Jan-April 2010.

This programme would be conducted under Auroville Integral Sustainability Institute which is an emerging sub-activity under PATH which is registered unit of Auroville Foundation. All related paperwork, financial transactions, invoices/ receipts would be issued by PATH, Auroville.

It was completely barren land that has been transformed into a lush green forest within a small period of 20 years thus recharging the ground water table and creating a habitable environment for all.
