Chilled water flow rate guidelines for process chiller systems

Below are some simple chiller pipe sizing guidelines along with some basic tips on how to properly size and run you water lines to your chilled water process. Look over the chiller links they will greatly help if you need further information about chillers.

Pipe sizing guide based on 10' Head loss/100' of pipe (Old steel pipe C = 100 )

1/2" = 2 GPM 3/4" = 5 GPM 1" = 10 GPM 1-1/4" = 20 GPM

1-1/2" = 30 GPM 2" = 50 GPM 2-1/2" = 90 GPM 3" = 160 GPM

4" = 320 GPM 5" = 600 GPM 6" = 900 GPM 8" = 2000 GPM

These figures are based on a 100 ft run in steel pipe. In most cases the flow rates will be better.

Plumbing sizes (chiller water systems 35-70F)

Rule of thumb tips for sizing:
1. If ever in question, use the water line sizes exiting the chiller. The lines are that size for a reason. (Do not reduce) 2. Reducing lines will drastically reduce your heat removal from your process and increase your electrical running costs. 3. Install full port valves (ball style not gate valves). Make sure there are valves to isolate: screens, chillers, tanks and pumps. 4. Never use iron or steel piping. (always use SCH80 PVC, copper or stainless steel). SCH 80 is the least expensive & best.

How to pick your water line sizes.
