Introduction to Sex Tourism Sex tourism is considered to be an ethical issue which is related with tourism industry, industry of se tourism

is considered to be most controversial industry in world. It helps to generate revenue for the sex tourism destinations as it involves in the business of trafficking of women as well as childrens. Through this study I tried to highlight the phenomenon of sex tourism specifically the motivation of tourists (Baloglu & Uysal, 1996). Through this study it is concluded that there are two drives of motivation for sex tourists first is their physical needs and second one is their psychological needs which both are combined to make their personal needs. If we consider physical needs it includes two things first one is physical problems and second when their needs of sex are not met, In case of psychological needs there are two types of needs which are generally include first one is modernity and hedonistic drive. Two things first one is physical and second one is psychological gain are two reasons for sex tourists to attract towards sex tourism destination. Physical gains include the attractiveness of sex tourism destination and psychological gains include sex tourists feel a sense of belongingness, they feel that place a place when he feels free and exciting as well as power reestablishment (Carr, 2002). Among all of these modernity is considered to one of the most important factors that affect the level of motivation of sex tourists in an indirect manner,

Meaning of Sex Tourism

In various countries of the world the industry of sex tourism is growing at a faster rate as compare to the industry of tourism. The main reason behind this growth is the huge amount of revenue s generated by sex tourists destination by this industry. But the industry of sex tourism affects the culture and reputation of a country in negative manner. You all heard about the term sex tourisms but it is very difficult to make a difference between two terms first one sex tourists and another one is normal tourists. The main reason behind this may be it is possible that sex tourists pretend him as normal tourists and vice versa also, it totally depends upon the activities in which he/she participates (Agrusa, 2003). Sex tourism is considered to be a problem of all over the
1

world and takes place in various countries of the world such as Brazil, Thailand, as well as countries of Caribbean (Chhabra, 2003).

The term Sex tourism always brings in your mind the image of western businesses being herded onto buses and into juicy bars in South Korea or go-go bars in Thailand, it actually transpires in a variety of ways and in many different locations (Cohen, 1972).

If we consider the definition of sex tourism it means residents of countries which are developed I economic manner are travelled to underdeveloped countries for the purpose of buying the sexual activities of that countries men, women and children as well. There are various agents in many countries such as in Asia, US and Europe who promote sex tour packages to a group of persons just to earn commission. You have seen various brochures having slogans in order to promote sex tourism such as Tours of sex and real girls real cheap. There is one brochure of US which slogan is Every tour (To Thailand) consists of one package of nite life. Its prices depends upon the time you spent with lovely ladies and they promise the same thing which means sex with exotic, beautiful and lovely ladies, it is not possible for you to find such ladies in your home countries. In case of sex tourism, there are various questions to ask first one is the definition of sex tourists, who are sex tourists, demographic profile of sex tourists. What you think about classification of sex tourists, whether it includes all those people who are going to sex tourism destination only for sexual activities with the local womens of that countries (Dann, 1981). Sex tourist person only said to be that person who buys packages related to sex tour. Here it is important to define the term sex tourists which mean a person who is very open and desires for opportunities for sexual activities. There are various evidences which show that most of the sexual activities between sex tourists and locals in Sex tourism destination start with a conversion in nights clubs, pubs. If we consider the case of US, a conversion between a male and female is very common but in Asian and Caribbean countries, it is considered to be a type of negotiation. It is very awkward for a tourist to declare oneself as sex tourist because

sex tourisms are considered to be an illegal and immoral activity in various countries. So the relationship that exists between sex tourists and se workers are termed as
2

romance tourism or travel companionship. It is not always assumed that sex tourism involves exchange of money. Sometimes the relationship between sex tourists and workers does not involve currency. Some tourists give souvenirs from their countries and some pay for all expenses during the time spent with sex workers. Some even offer flight tickets for sex workers to travel back to the tourists hometown. If we describe the profile of sex tourists, it mainly involves older persons who are suffered from mid life crisis. If we consider the example of profile they are the persons who is currently doing a decent job such as a manager or a self employed person having a good business which allows that persons to afford trips to such sex tourism destination (Edlund & Korn, 2002). There are some other situations which are rarely studied, there are some young women which are highly educated and having a very good package and job, but they are satisfied, they also sometimes become sex tourists, like wise sex tourists in Jamaica. So from the above discussion it is concluded that sex tourists could be any person irrespective of their age, level of education and gender. So it is very difficult to define the term sex tourists in demographic manner. There are two terms first one is prostitution and second one is sex tourism which are interrelated with each other. As sex tourists means tourists using prostitution services beyond the limits of their home country. Prostitution is very common to less developed countries and it takes place all over the world from centuries. It means exchange of cash or any other benefits in exchange of sexual activities. The nature of prostitution is very unique as it not only involves exchange of persons for work. But a certain period of time is there when a sex worker also gives up his/her power over to anonymous others. This transaction not only involves agreed amount of labor but it also includes the power to labor over an agreed period time. So from all this it is concluded that prostitution can be defined as an institution that gives one person a permission to control over another person (O Connell & Davidson, 1998). It can be referred as a type of non productive sex i.e. commercial sex against payment as opposed to reproduce sex such as in case of marriage sex with your spouse (Edlund & Korn, 2002). Prostitutes are generally considered to be a people who belong to poor families; their main duty is to give sexual services to their clients. It is not a matter of surprise that they never make prostitute women as their wives as their main motive is to satisfy their sexual needs which are not
3

satisfied by their wives sometimes. It is a matter of belief that sometimes sexual relationship with a young girl will help to increase virility in some of the countries. It will lead to increase in demand for both sex workers which may be a men, women, and a child that will lead to increase in their amount as against their sexual services. The main purpose of their services is to satisfy the sexual needs of their clients which are not satisfied by their partners. Another reason that will lead to involve in sexual activities with young women is that they are not satisfied with sex relationship with only one partner. There are some mens which are having a secret desire to inv olve in sexual activities with prostitute as in case if they show their desire either his wife or girlfriend never give their permission to involve in such type of activities. Another reason that causes a man to use the services of prostitutes is gender differences, as we all know that both men and women are differ biologically. If we consider men they are having more sexual drive as compare to women (Fisher & Price 1991). The dissimilarities between both are considered to be the reason for their attraction towards prostitute services. So the idea of having a partner and at the same time they are also manage to have sexual relationship with their various women shows that they are real men. The concept of this is well known among the users who are taking prostitute services. So from all these it is know that there are various reasons of a person involved in prostitute services which are as follows: The main purpose of taking prostitute services is to satisfy the sexual needs of their clients which are not satisfied by their partners. Another reason that will lead to involve in sexual activities with young women is that they are not satisfied with sex relationship with only one partner. Another main reason that causes a man to use the services of prostitutes is gender differences, as we all know that both men and women are differ biologically. Whenever we talk about sex tourism Thailand is one of the few countries where sex tourism is considered to be a revenue generating industry, Most of the tourists who are arrived alone in Thailand are there for sex purpose so they are considered to be sex tourists. There are various sites which promotes sex tour packages such as www.dexterhorn.com and www.lovetours.com which shows the level of sex tourism
4

takes place in Thailand, In Thailand, prostitution activities are illegal but sex tourism is not considered to be an illegal industry as government in Thailand play an important role in promoting sex tourism as it is very helpful to generate revenue for government. There are some sex tourism areas in Thailand which are very popular such as Pattaya or Patpong, In these areas both sex tourism as well as tourism both are tolerated, The data collected from the previous research it is evident that sex tourism is taking place in Thailand. It is considered to be a good way to generate revenue, In addition to this there are various aspects which are generally related with se tourism but they are not pleasant are as follows: - Sex tourism affects the national cultures as well as values of countries in adverse manner and it creates a problems of trafficking of women as well as childrens all over the world. Sex tourism is also considered to be a means of

transmission of HIV. Another problem that is faced by sex tourism is the domestic problems which are faced by tourists at home (Godbey, 1990).

As the main purpose of sex tourists is to satisfy their sexual needs at sex tourism destination that create an environment which are not good when they return to their home country. These affects their relationship with their wives/husbands as well as their daily routine life in adverse way. If these unsatisfied needs of having sexual

relationship are not identify in future , then in such situation sex tourism is continue to exist in the near future also. Sex tourism is considered to a timely phenomenon which creates various problems which are social as well as health problem at sex tourism destination as well as in the country from where the sex tourists belongs. There is a need to know more about sex tourism and the reason why people travelled to sex tourism destination and their motives behind their visit to sex tourism destination. There is a definition which is given by WTO (World Tourism Organization) related to sex tourism which means a trip or a tour which is scheduled whether within the boundaries of tourism sector or not within the boundaries of tourism sector but they are using or work within the networks and structures with the main purpose of having sexual relationship with local men/women/children of sex tourism destination. In this study sex tourism includes both commercial as well as non commercial sexual relationships

between sex tourists and men/women/children of sex tourism destination (Gustafson, 2002).

Reasons for Sex tourism and travelled to Sex Tourism destination There are various needs that motivate a person to visit to sex tourism destination:1. Physical needs:- It includes: a. Physical problems: - The main reason for sex tourists to travel to sex tourism destination is the health problems that they are faced in their home country. If asked from sex tourists, they said weather is one of the important reasons why they are travelled to Thailand. At wintertime both North America and Europe are very cold and at time temperature at Thailand especially in Pattaya is around 7585 degree Fahrenheit. So cold weather and some sex tourists said cold weather makes their life in their country boring are the reason for their traveling to sex tourism destinations (Harold, 2001). b. Their sexual needs are not satisfied in their home country, the reason for this may be they are single, divorced or sometimes they are not happy with their partners. Overall, mostly sex tourists travelled to sex tourism destination as they were living alone in their home countries. c. Some sex tourists giving an opinion that living alone is very boring as well as difficult one, so they travelled to sex tourism destination in order to find a girl friend for the purpose of spending time with her and after that they going back to their home country (Heath, 1992). d. In case of an older person it is very difficult to find a young girl in their home country as sometimes it is against their norms and culture of their home country. So this will be the reason for older persons to travel to sex tourism destination as no young girl in their home country is ready to make sexual relationship with him. So they visit to sex tourism destination for the purpose of finding a girlfriend or companionship (Harrill & Potts, 2002). e. The reason that motivates a person is to visit to sex tourism destination is the lack of availability of attractive young women in their home countries so their sexual needs are not satisfied. Sex as you all knows that it is the necessity of life
6

just like sleeping and eating. So lack of attractive young women motivates them to visit to sex tourism destination so that they find a suitable girlfriend and companionship that satisfied with their sexual needs (Jamal & Hill, 2004). 2. Psychological needs a. Hedonistic; - Pleasure is considered to be one of the most important psychological factors that motivate a person to visit to Sex tourism destination. So pleasures which they get from sexual activities motivate them to go to Sex tourism destination. b. Modernity:-

It includes various things: Person boredom in their life due to their hectic schedule and the same work again and again, make them bore so they want some change from such atmosphere and want some excitement and pleasure in their life which motivates them to visit to sex tourism destinations. If a person is rejected by another of opposite sex in their home country, than in such situation to get some change from such type of environment they visit to sex tourism destinations. If a person feels that he is losing power or control over another person of opposite sex then in order to get change and having a sense of control they visit to sex tourism destinations.

So these are some of the reasons that motivate a person to travel to sex tourism destination. The diagram given above shows that physical needs which includes two things first one is health problems faced in their home countries and when their sexual needs are not satisfied creates family problems as well as lack of availability of women in their home countries termed as physical needs. If we consider psychological needs it includes Person boredom in their life due to their hectic schedule and the same work again and again, make them bore so they want some change from such atmosphere, person is rejected by another of opposite sex in their home country, he is losing power or control over another person of opposite sex these are the psychological factors that motivate them to travel to sex tourism destination (Pruitt & LaFont, 1995). In order to control sex tourism there is a need to take action, various steps taken in order to control sex tourism are as follows:-

1. All those travel agencies which promotes se tour packages it is the duty of government to boycott all such agencies 2. There is a need to approach national airlines to spread the message that sex tourism is criminal as illegal activity.

Conclusion

In various countries of the world the industry of sex tourism is growing at a faster rate as compare to the industry of tourism. The main reason behind this growth is the huge amount of revenue s generated by sex tourists destination by this industry.
