Sustainability

Our consumption of natural resources and our release of harmful materials into the environment far exceed nature's ability to accommodate our demands. If we are to continue as a society, we need positive examples of economic success and environmental sustainability to serve as models for a better future. The Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort represents a major step in the right direction as it demonstrates that we can use what Mother Nature has to offer and, at the same time, provide attractions for our guests in the form of native plants, rainforests and coral reefs. Nature provides us with food from our gardens and recycles waste into useful resources. Jean-Michel Cousteau and his team of conservationists are constantly reminding people all around the world that physical, mental and spiritual rejuvenation are most effectively achieved by periodic separation from the clutter and clatter of modern civilization. What better place than the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort to achieve that rejuvenation? Thanks to the natural, heart-felt hospitality of the Fijian people, the beautiful natural surroundings, and our innovative environmental programs, the Resort has been the recipient of many awards and accolades. The Organic Garden & Edible Vegetation The lush gardens of the resort are filled with tropical fruits, including pineapple, banana, mango, avocado, papaya, coconut, lime, mandarin and guava. These are all included in our edible landscaping, enabling us to serve the freshest organic tropical fruits to our guests. The Organic Fruit & Vegetable Garden at the resort is meticulously cared for by dedicated staff. They apply traditional Fijian agricultural methods combined with sustainable practices learned from international experts in the area of sustainable crop production.

Reef Preservation The area up and down the coast in front of the resort is a designated Marine Reserve. It is managed jointly by the resort and the local community to preserve it for sustainable fishing and to maintain the health of the coral reef. Jean-Michel Cousteau was instrumental in establishing the reserve as part of his worldwide efforts to preserve the marine environment for future generations. Sustainability Practices

For many years, the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort has prided itself in the care it takes of the environment long before it became fashionable. The following are some of the core sustainability programs that are practiced at the resort: The menus do not include reef fish or farmed prawns. Recycling of glass and plastic. Composting of kitchen waste. Marine protected area around the resort. Water reclamation plant. Waste treatment system flows to ornamental ponds. Organic vegetable garden. Low voltage lighting. Solar panels on water heaters for some bures. No toxic chemicals in the laundry. Marine biologist teaches staff and at local schools. Timber for construction comes from certified local forests.
