Art in Odd Places Festival

WHAT IS IT?
Art in Odd Places (AiOP) arrives in Indianapolis October 17-18, 2014. AiOP is a site-specic, twoday, outdoor live public art event that will take place on Market Street, from City Market to Monument Circle. Imagine huge pillow sculptures, interactive photography stations, solar-powered symphonies, and dance happening up and down Market Street full of color, fun and surprise along the sidewalk.
Art in Odd Places (AiOP) presents interactive visual and performing art by local and visiting artists in unexpected public spaces. Since 2005, Art in Odd Places (AiOP) has produced an annual festival along 14th Street in Manhattan each October. AiOP has also happened in L.A., Boston, Sydney, Australia, and Greensboro, NC. impressive array of public art, murals, and The Cultural Trail to include the live creative arts. Art in Odd Places reminds people that public spaces should be grounds for diverse social interactions and connections. For the 10,000 visitors in town for a convention that weekend, and the thousands of daily downtown workers, AiOP will be a surprising, refreshing cultural experience. The businesses along Market Street will benefit as well. Lee Mortensen, Vice President of Downtown Greensboro Inc. said this of AiOP: The energy and ideas brought forth were exciting. Businesses were very receptive and shared the event details with their customers. We found it valuable as it brought a sense of activity in underutilized places. There was a great buzz downtown that positively impacted our restaurants and shops.

WHO WORKS ON IT?

Drawing on its 10-year history of creative placemaking, Big Car will collaborate with AiOP to activate Downtown Indy with temporal creative work. Working with businesses, community members, artists and the site in a mindful approach, AiOP and Big Car will select the curators, arrange logistics and permits, work with business owners, and market and document the event. The founder of AiOP, Ed Woodham, will also speak at TEDxIndianapolis October 21 at the Hilbert Circle Theatre.

The proposed budget for AiOP Indianapolis is $40,000 with dollars going to pay for artists, curation, administration, and promotion. Partners on AiOP here include the Arts Council of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Museum of Art and No Exit Performance.
