From the Principals Desk

Welcome Back from Spring Break! I would like to thank all of the parents and family members that have recently attended the many events that have taken place here at Hickory Elementary this past month! Please take a few minutes to read this important newsletter that features future dates and times of additional upcoming events. April is the onset of spring, and one of the first signs of spring we notice is that students often desire to exchange the wearing of long pants for shorts. For your childs safety, we continue to discourage the wearing of shorts on warm "Spring-like" days. Our school grounds can be very wet and muddy, and we often have recess on the macadam only. As the students are trying to stretch their muscles, which may not have been frequently exercised during the winter months, they tend to fall down while playing. The number of bumps and bruises increases in the spring and the potential for these injuries increases when students wear shorts. A jacket or sweatshirt will help protect the elbows and may still be required on chilly days. Students are encouraged to wear sneakers or other sturdy footwear to school. Open sandals, and dress shoes are discouraged, flipflops are not allowed. For safety reasons, only students wearing sneakers or other sturdy footwear will be permitted to use the playground equipment. Thank you for your help in assuring your childs safety and comfort on the playground during the transitional weather of spring into summer. Please review the WCPS 2013-14 Handbook and Guide for more detailed information on the guidelines school dress codes. Congratulations to all the participants in the Girls on the Run Team! Thank you to our teacher sponsors who volunteer their time and energy to make sure that this program is a success. Girls on the Run is a North American non-profit program that works to encourage pre-teen girls as they develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games, culminating in a celebratory 5k race. The organizations curricula seek to address all aspects of the girls development to enhance their physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual well-being while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. Thank you to The Heart of America Foundation and Fed Ex Ground of Hagerstown for our new Media Center. The reveal took place on April 22nd, and it is beautiful! In addition to the newly designed reading and technology center, each student received three brand new books that they may take home to keep. Parents and relatives please feel free to stop by and take a peek! Thank you for your support! Respectfully, Mrs. Kuhna
