LESSON PLAN

Date: 4 th-9 th February 2008


Class: 1 A, B, C, D, E, F and G
Topic: Theme 1: Investigating the Past
Sub- topic: Evidence from the past
No. of Periods: The topic ( s) can be taught in 2 to 3 periods.

Aim: The students would be able to learn about evidences,


archaeological findings and historical sources with reference to
Brunei.

Objectives: At the end of the lesson the students would be able


to;

1. Name some area in Brunei where archaeological findings can


be found ( e. g Kota Batu, Pulau Chermin and Limau Manis)
2. Understand the history of early Brunei with the reference to
the two historical sources ( Syair Awg Semaun and Salasilah
Raja- Raja Brunei)
3. Know the works of an archaeologists and their findings
( example; pottery, coins, remains of a trading settlements)

References:

Teaching aids:

1. Pottery, coins, and replica of Batu Tersilah.


2. Cards ( for students to write down clues)
3. Shovel/ digging tools, magnifying glass.
4. Colour pencils, glues, clay etc.

Lesson Presentation/ methodology:

1 st activities

Set Inductions:

1. A week before the actual lesson take place, the students


are already given guidelines on the activities they are going
to do for the next lesson:

2. Guidelines: Students were instructed to bring old pottery or


vase, bowl, coins, old maps, old pictures and so on from
home. NOT to forget small beach shovel.

3. Guidelines: Divide the students into 3 groups ( mix of boys
and girls); name the group, selecting the leader.

4. Guidelines: Activities procedures were explain to the


students on what they are going to do. ( Theme: “Amazing
Race”; therefore students using clues/ or sketch map on how
to find the hidden artefacts.

5. Guidelines: The students are told to bury their selected


artefacts somewhere in the school compounds. Flexible.

Lesson Developments:
1. On the day when the lesson takes place, about 3-4 minutes
students are asked to go to their respective groups.

2. Next, 5-10 minutes, teacher giving brief explanation on the


lesson topics. Emphasizing on the importance of Batu
tersilah and Syair Awg Semaun.

3. Then each group has to write down clear descriptions of the


artefacts that they buried and give clues on how to find the
artefacts. The descriptions and clues should be written on a
card. (10 minutes)

4. In 2-3 minutes, students will then have to exchange their


cards with other groups.

5. The students are then allowed to search for the artefacts


with the help of the clues written/ sketch map on the card
( description and location) within 15-20 minutes.

6. The first group to find the artefacts will be considered as


the 1 st place winner, or 2 nd place or third place. REWARDS
ARE GIVEN!!!

7. After they have found the artefacts, each group will then do
a mini presentation, simply by sharing the information
written in the cards with the whole class. (15 minutes or
more)- the presentation may continue on the next lesson (1
period).

Closure:

1. On the next lesson, students will continue the


presentation, making a replica of Batu Tersilah using clay
and a written exercise (30 Minutes)

OR

2 nd activities:

1) Divide the students into 3-4 groups.


2) Each group will then have their own mini exhibition within the
class itself.
3) The students simply bring some old antiques, old books,
bronze gongs or bowls, and cannon, money notes and so on
from home.
4) The class has their own mini auction, selling some of the
precious antiques and so on ( paying them using monopoly
money). During the auction, the students will have to prepare
some description on the items they are selling and the
estimated price.

OR

3 rd activities: ( required highly thinking skills)

1) Students are asked to collect and find any current events,


items, news or ceremonies, etc., which can be use as a
historically evidence, etc., for the next future generation. For
example the coronation of the Royal Prince Al- Muhtadee Billah.

OR

4 th activities:

1) Students reading poem “ Syair Awg Semaun”. (4 groups)


2) 1 selected students from each group involved in giving
comments, instructive criticism among themselves and giving
grades.
3) Written exercise.
