ANTON ARIF PAMBUDI 2211411029 If Bilingual are not effective, the Solution is Dual Language
According to the latest research result, bilingual education system that used by Indonesia this day are less effective, because it disregards the use of Indonesian language. Its impact will be felt when the kid get into higher education level. Dr. David Freeman, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Yvonne Freeman, Professor of Bilingual Education from U.S.A, reveals the result of bilingual education system which preferring to use foreign language in the school. According to Freeman, mastering foreign language is important, but it is also important to do not disregard the mother language, in this case is Indonesian language. It is delivered by spouse Freeman in seminar that held in High/Scope Indonesia School about Dual Language, Theory and Effective Program, Wednesday, 13rd May ago. This seminar was held in order to celebrate National Education Day. In the seminar also explained about the result of the research from Thomas & Collier at 1997 toward student in U.S.A. For the kids who initially use mother language (English) as their first education, has higher academic level than other kids who initially use foreign language as their first education. In realizing the important of mother language than English, Dual Language program considered as the solution of the academicals problem that would be faced in the future. Dual Language Program refer to additive program, it is a program that harmonizing the use of mother language and foreign language. It relates closely to the formation of the concept of the early academic children. For the kids that have strong academic concept in their mother language, are also able to get good academic ability in foreign language. However, it will come out different for the kids who are not strong in mother language's academic concept, they are not able to have strong academic in both language. Still related with the research of Freeman in Washington, U.S.A, it shows that kids who run the Dual Language program, where their academic abilities are strong, no matter for their mother language as well as their foreign language, is more success and paid highly when they are work in a corporation. According to Antarina S.F Amir, Managing Director High/Scope School Indonesia, in the use of Dual Language program, the system of the lesson are using both language. There is a course which use Indonesian language and there are also some course that using English. In review, view, and preview are using another language. The other way of assembling Dual Language program is by determine Language of The Day regularly between both English and Indonesian. Thereby, kids would understand the concept in Indonesia or English. The ability of using Indonesian language are also trained. Till now, High/Scope Indonesia School is the first school in Indonesia that use the Dual Language program. According to Antarina, this program has been carried out over the past two years, but the result is still yet to be seen. "Most schools are trying to run this program and fail for those who couldn't patient in the test Dual Language in school. It takes patience, because the results may be seen just four years later, depending on each child, "said Antarina.
