Unit Title: Play Ball Softball Content Area: Physical Fitness Name: Susana Gonzalez Grade Level: 7th

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): -1.1 Demonstrate mature techniques for the following patterns: overhand, sidearm, and underhand throwing; catching; kicking/punting; striking; trapping; dribbling (hand and foot); and volleying. -2.1 Identify and describe key elements in the mature performance of overhand, sidearm, and underhand throwing; catching; kicking/punting; striking; trapping; dribbling (hand and foot); and volleying. -2.2 Analyze movement patterns and correct errors. -3.5 Participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity a minimum of four days each week. -4.5 Describe the role of physical activity and nutrition in achieving physical tness. -5.3 Demonstrate an acceptance of differences in physical development and personal preferences as they affect participation in physical activity. Big Ideas: -What are the components of catching a ball and why are they important? -How does stance and positioning affect batting? -How does physical fitness and conditioning affect play in a game Unit Goals and Objectives: Psychomotor: 1.The students will demonstrate the correct ready position needed for fielding a ball. 2.Students will learn to correctly perform the techniques for throwing, catching, batting and running the bases. 3.The students will exhibit the correct body weight transfer, arm angle, follow through and release needed to accurately throw a softball. 4.The students will display the correct stance, body weight transfer and level swing needed to hit a softball. 5.The students will show how to correctly run the bases, including how to round them. Cognitive: 1.Students will learn the rules to softball and will follow most of them while playing in class. 2.They will have to be able to determine whether or not to catch the ball in the air or get it off the ground. 3. Analyze movement patterns and correct errors. 4. Students will work together.

5. Students will cooperate with others regardless of personal differences. Affective: 1.The students will display good sportsmanship during play in victory or defeat. 2.The students will utilize the concept of teamwork during play. 3.The students will demonstrate behavior that is consistent with safe guidelines as outlined by the teacher. 4.The students will be sensitive to the differences in physical ability levels of other students. Unit Summary: This lesson is filled with the basics of Softball. It will outline five skills and techniques that are essential to being successful in the sport. As we view the presentation, download the guided notes below to fill in the answers throughout the lesson. This will help you for the test next week! There are some great videos in this presentation and I hope you enjoy them and become inspired and excited to get out on the field and play some softball. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: KWL Chart: KWL stands for KNOW/WHAT/LEARNED. What do you already know about Softball? How is it played or what are the rules? Do you watch it on TV? What would you like to know about Softball? What have you learned (by the end of the unit)? At the beginning of the lesson you will only have the first two sections of the chart completed. By the end the entire chart will be done and you will have a much better understanding of the sport.

Formative: 1. Flash cards: Use the flashcards to the below to quiz yourself and a partner. 2. Scatter Game: On the bottom corner of the flashcards please use drop down and select Scatter Game. Use this activity to test your knowledge of some of the key elements and other information related to Softball even further. 3. Quiz: Students will have a quiz on the history and key elements on Softball and skills needed. All information is based on lecture, activities, and discussion in class. 4. Partner Skill Evaluation: Students will look at rubrics while partnered up and they will be able to asses their classmates. Students will be able to identify essential elements to skills needed in Softball and help their classmates improve by giving proper feedback.

Summative: 1. Project: Students will work on a project related to Softball. There will be no duplicate topics. I will provide a list of topics to choose from and they will be first come first serve. We will discuss this further. 2. Skill Assessment: Below are rubrics for the different skills we will be working on. Students will be evaluated based on the key elements and how many they are able to display while executing them. (To look at the other rubrics for the different skills click on BLUE show me more.)

Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to appreciate and show their knowledge of a minimum of 4 facts about Softball. Students will be able to show their knowledge of a minimum of four different skills in Softball correctly when indicated by the teacher. Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to show their knowledge of a minimum of three different salsa styles. Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to show their knowledge of a minimum of four different softball skills by performing them correctly.

Lesson Activities: Webercise Complete the webercise and write down answers that need written responses on a piece of paper. Use the links embedded in the webercise to help you complete this assignment. Each student will be working with a partner to complete this assignment. You may turn in one paper with both your names on the paper for written responses. Have fun! Lesson Activities: Graphic Organizer Now is your chance to really become familiar with the skills involved in Softball. You will be working together to create a Popplet that breaks down the skills we discussed in class which includes catching, throwing, batting, bunting and fielding a ball. You will find information about these steps in your textbook as well as the websites provided in throughout this unit. Each member of the group will complete a breakdown of a different

skill and work together on the last skill. At the end of each breakdown, you must include a picture or video of demonstrating the skill. If picture is used it must be showing the correct form. It can be a picture found on the internet or picture taking of someone in your group. Be creative. Remember what it was like when you first learned these skills, try to make it simple and easy so that a complete novice can understand and learn. The Popplet should have a title and break off into the five skills. You will have one week to complete this assignment. Your breakdown of the skills should show me your knowledge and understanding of how the skills are to be done correctly in order to be successful. It is important to organize our thoughts in a graphic organizer because it helps us learn the correct movement patterns and also helps us to teach each other.To complete this assignment successfully you must work together with your group. Have fun, learn, and don't be afraid to be creative and add your own twists into this assignment.
