Content Area: Math Grade Level: 6th Topic: Geometric Shape Vocabulary Content Standard: M4.C.1.

1 Identify/describe the basic properties of geometric figures in two or three dimensions. Literacy Standard: Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears. Essential Questions: 1. How can completing a scavenger hunt help us connect our vocabulary words to objects found in the world around us? 2. Why is it beneficial to connect your math curriculum to the real world? Instructional Methodology: Strategy: I Spy: A Scavenger Hunt Step-by-Step: 1. Give students a list of teacher generated vocabulary words 2. Explain to students that they are looking for examples for each of the words. (Example: A right angle could be found on the corner of a textbook or a window in your house) 3. Students can work in small groups or by themselves and search for items which match the words, then document where they found each example. 4. Students will then individually explain/write the connection they found between the words, their findings, and the current unit of study.
Comment [S3]: INTASC standard: Motivation and Management; in this activity students are searching both inside and outside of the classroom for real life examples of their vocabulary words. This allows them to connect the words to real life experiences while also actively engaging them in their learning. Comment [S1]: This lesson was designed as a prereading strategy for upcoming vocabulary in a new lesson. I think it is important to address reading in math and vocabulary is an excellent way to get the students to focus on the different words that they will be presented with throughout a unit.

Comment [S2]: This lesson address the following Content standard from the Common Core and also the Literacy Standard listed.

Formative Assessment: Collect their word sheet and briefly look at the connections that students were making, checking to see if they were first math related and second if they were related to the current unit we are studying. Materials: Vocabulary List Document Camera Paper and Pencil
