U0809519 4/8/2014 Literacy Practices Inventory and Report Introduction: When the study and topic of a report of literacy

practices among a certain group or society on campus was discussed in class, I was immediately concerned that I would not be able to complete the assignment. I am a transfer student to the University of Utah and will be a senior this coming fall semester. Throughout my time here at the university I havent had the occasion to get involved with campus organizations, clubs, or communities other than class time. I am working two jobs currently so between my jobs and classes there isnt a lot of time for other activities. However, taking into consideration that I will soon be graduating and continuing my journey of life into the professional working world, I figured that taking time to evaluate how literacy practices can be and are used in business would better assist me for the not too distant future. Dominos Pizza is very well-known and is the second most successful pizza chain in the world just after Pizza Hut. The three dots on the domino represent the first 3 stores that Tom Monaghan, founder, opened in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Since 1965 the company has grown at an exponential rate and currently Dominos Pizza can be found in 73 countries with 10,566 stores world-wide. By identifying all the possible literacy practices at my current place of employment, Dominos Pizza, I will be able to better understand how those practices are applied in business

and then manufacture success. Communication and relationships with customers, co-workers, and superiors is monumentally important in order for a prosperous company to exist. Focusing on the most successful practices of literacy can potentially help my future career and will make me a better asset to any company with which I find employment.

Statement of Significance: I believe that the evaluation of any literacy practice has the potential to help us understand more fully how communication and language has the ability to evolve. While examining different literacy practices at my place of work I have found that Dominos Pizza is not exempt from continuous change when it comes to how we communicate with both the public and amongst co-workers. Modern day technology allows for more options and preferred methods of literacy. As a student and potential working professional, it is essential to both acknowledge and embrace the changes of literacy practices in business. Discussion: In order to demonstrate the use of different literacy practices at Dominos Pizza I have collected some items and artifacts. It is no surprise that new age technology is by far the most effective and influential source of literacy that Dominos uses. The internet has allowed customers easier access to the menu, prices, specials, etc. Some specials, in fact, can only be used if the customer places their order online. We send out massive amounts of mail advertisements and we attach flyers to the boxes that we put the food in but these methods of

advertising are truly becoming a thing of the past. It seems that the majority of the population will look electronically for anything that want or need. Therefore, emphasis on capitalizing on all things electronic is a key to staying competitive and successful. Even though the online area is growing, the majority of our orders still come by telephone. It is a method of communication that has been around for some time now and is still very effective. The introduction of the smart phone allows us to better communicate with our customers, find them better, and deliver their order to them faster than ever which results in happier reoccurring customers.

Descriptions of Artifacts 1. Text from General Manager- Just like with any other job people call in sick or have an emergency and I get text messages from my manger asking if I am able to cover a shift. Speed of communication, such as texting, makes finding a replacement easier. 2. Weekly Schedule- The schedule runs from Monday thru Sunday and has all the days and times that each employee will work that week. If someone needs a shift covered they can look at the schedule and ask others that are not working if they are able to work for them. 3. Corporate website- Corporate communicates with Dominos employees thru a website called Team Member Service Center (TMSC). On this site employees are able to view their current and past pay check amounts, print out W-2s, and sign off on notifications/policies that corporate issues and acknowledge that they understand them

4. E-mail Notifications- Corporate also sends out e-mails notifying you that you need to log onto the corporate website because there is something there that needs your attention. 5. Work related acronyms- Dominos has many work related acronyms in order to speed up service and also for convenience. Some of the most popular acronyms are: DOT (Deliveries on Time), OTD (Out the Door), FIFO (First In, First Out), and OER (Operations Evaluation Report) 6. Promotional Flyer- This is a basic advertisement that Dominos mails out to inform people of the specials that we are currently running and to promote any new products that we may be introducing. 7. Interview with General Manager Adam McGuiness- I sat down with Adam and asked him about how different literacy practices are used at Dominos Pizza in Sandy, Utah. Conclusion: After weeks of researching, discussing, and thinking about literacy practices in general and more specifically at my current place of employment, Dominos Pizza, I can say that identifying and understanding how literacy practices are used in the workplace will better assist anyone in being successful in their position at work. Also technology continues to play more of a role in every aspect of life including work. Communication and technology are becoming more and more intertwined and the person that is both willing and able to adapt to newest technology will be considered more valuable in the work place.
