Act 3 Tableaux Tableaux Vivants (Living Pictures) are used in the worlds of art and theater to recreate famous works of art and recreate scenes from literature using backdrops, props, costumes, and live models. These scenes are easy because only a few key lines from the original work are needed. Like frozen statues, the actors arrange themselves in an appropriate opening tableaux; then one at a time each actor comes to life, speaks a line, and changes position. Today we will divide into groups to create tableauxs of our own: Benvolio and Mercutio say they should get off the street and avoid the Capulets, but they don't (Lines 1-35, Benvolio, Mercutio) Benvolio and Mercutio encounter Tybalt and the Capulets. Romeo tries to be friendly, but Tybalt challenges him. Mercutio draws on Tybalt. Romeo tries to break them up but they fight (Lines 36-86, Benvolio, Mercutio, Tybalt, Romeo) This scene will be performed by 2 groups. Romeo steps between Tybalt and Mercutio as they fight. Tybalt wounds Mercutio by running his sword under Romeo's arm. (Lines 87-117, Romeo, Mercutio, Benvolio) Benvolio reports Mercutio's death. Romeo vows revenge, slays Tybalt, and then flees (Lines 118-138, Benvolio, Romeo, Tybalt) Citizens of Verona summon the prince, who banishes Romeo (Lines 139-199, Citizen, Benvolio, Prince, Lady Capulet, Montague). Each group member is to assume a role and the task of searching the assigned section of the scene for one of his or her character's most significant lines. The line could clearly reveal character, a feeling, an important moment in the plot, or a prediction of coming events. Your group should also make sure that the lines chosen work well together. Each group should also be prepared to explain why they chose the lines and actions that they did. Tips: Fill out the Act 3 Tableaux chart first. Then begin to block the scene by first arranging yourselves in an appropriate opening tableaux and then freezing. Then rehearse the tableaux. One at a time each character should come to life, say his or her line, change position, and freeze. Then decide on a closing tableaux, which should reflect the outcome of the lines spoken.
