Global Classrooms Initiative: Latin American Exchange Model UN

Participants: 1. Secretariat students from Colegio Ingls, Monterrey, Mexico: http://www.cingles.edu.mx/contenido.aspx?id=13&idm=2 2. Model UN Club (MUN) students from Worcester Academy, Worcester, MA, USA: http://www.worcesteracademy.org/podium/default.aspx?t=130967 Objective: to create a learning experience where students from both schools will have an opportunity to share their experience in MUN organization and in participation as delegates in international simulations. To provide them with an authentic audience they can coach and learn from. To provide them with the opportunity communicate students from other cultures and express themselves adequately in an oral and written fashion to discuss relevant issues. In addition, to debate to reach solutions to the issues that were presented.

Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks CCSS CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.9-10.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Goals: Both groups of students introduce each other on a private forum on Schoology Teachers and ed tech coaches from both schools do a Google Hangout to introduce each other and plan for details of the following stages. Both groups of students participate in a Q & A session together to share experiences related to MUN. These questions are prepared in advance by both groups. If necessary, time is given beforehand to research some of the questions. After previously choosing a debate topic that is relevant to both groups and researching that topic, a debate is organized online.

Logistics/Availability Time Difference: There is a one-hour time difference between our countries: If it is 8AM (Eastern Standard Time-EST) in Worcester, MA, it is 7AM in Mexico. Worcester Academy: The MUN Club at Worcester meets 1-2x week, on either Thursday or Friday, from 2:50-3:30 (EST.) The Worcester Academy Model UN Club also meets on an alternating Thursday/Friday schedule.
