Fans hypothesi@ed and arg?ed abo?t its sometimes literal, sometimes metaphorical meaning and seldom got it B?ite right. The story behind CFire $nd #ainD has reached the point o> legend now, in spite o> JT<s calm ass?rances that it<s really not all that di>>ic?lt to ?nderstand. )ost commonly, stories are told o> the girl>riend, .?@anne, who the band had arranged to >ly to meet JT as a s?rprise while on to?r. &er plane crashed, the legend goes, and the tragedy o> it all inspired JT to speak o> C>lying machines in pieces.D The tr?th, o> co?rse, is somewhat di>>erent. JT eAplains that the song is really abo?t three separate times in his li>e = three hard times when he tho?ght abo?t giving ?p. .?@anne was either a >riend he<d known at $?sten #iggs or a >riend o> dr?mmer Joel O< rien<s brother. !n either case, JT<s band members heard abo?t her s?icide, b?t at the time they decided he was too str?ng o?t on dr?gs to deal with the loss. The alb?m<s title song inevitably became connected to JT himsel>, tho?gh it<s only partially abo?t him. The original .weet aby James was brother $leA<s son James, who was named a>ter his ?ncle. JT 7

says the song came to him d?ring a long solo drive on the way to see his nephew >or the >irst time. The res?lt was Csimply one o> the best l?llabies ever composed,D according to the (:0( Time story. Fans may not have known what to think abo?t C.teamroller,D tho?gh. ,estled between the lighthearted C.?nny .kiesD and the characteristically easygoing CCo?ntry #oadD was an ?nmitigated bl?es t?ne with lyrics that seemed downright lewd in comparison to the alb?m<s other t?nes. The story behind the song goes back to JT<s Flying )achine days at the ,ight Owl, and he<d invariably la?nch into the long-winded eAplanation at his early shows. The story was clearly as well rehearsed as the song, with only the slightest variation in wording at each telling. &ere, in JT<s own words, is the eAplanation >or C.teamrollerD as transcribed >rom the (:0; JTJJoni )itchell C radio show bootlegE 5e played this eight-month long gig at a place called the ,ight Owl Ca>e down in "reenwich 8illage in ,ew 'ork. !t ?sed to be a )c2o?gal and Third, b?t it might have moved since then. ! don<t know. $nyhow, at that time there were a lot o> so-called bl?es gro?ps in ,ew 'ork City, yo? knowK $nd they were making a lot o> noise with electric g?itars and ampli>iers that their parents had bo?ght them >or Christmas and birthdays and st?>>. Fans who hadn<t heard JT<s eAplanation probably co?ldn<t tell i> he was serio?s or not, b?t they loved it regardless. ,ow, three decades later, the song is a permanent >iAt?re o> JT<s perennial live shows and the only live per>ormance on (:0-<s enormo?s-selling C"reatest &its.D The alb?m ended with tong?e >irmly in cheek. C.?ite For /;",D according to JT, was a last-min?te composition to >ill the last slot on the new alb?m. They needed one more track, so James hastily stitched together some bits and pieces o> songs he<d been working on and the band recorded it. C?lt >ilm director )onte &ellman asked JT to join C each oyD 2ennis 5ilson, 5arren Oates, and +a?rie ird in an avant-garde road movie that seemed heavily in>l?enced by (:-:<s Easy ider. !n interviews, JT reveals his bitterness abo?t the eAperience o> per>orming in a >ilm where he had no creative control. &e and the other actors weren<t even given a complete script. !nstead, &ellman handed them j?st the neAt day<s dialog?e, then asked to per>orm almost as an improvisation.
