THE ZODIAC MOST ANCIENT

After Evoking Oriaxi, she may just relate that the Zodiac is far older than many believe to be the case. One of the most interesting interpretations of the Prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux in France is that the paintings were actually animal representations of the Zodiac. The Cave paintings in France's Lascaux region are considered by many researchers to be the Sistine Chapel of the Prehistoric era. Ever since the paintings were discovered, scientists and historians have theorized about the meaning behind the intricate wall murals. They were long believed to be simple drawings by Cavemen whose most notable skills involved hunting, gathering and procreation, but new science suggests there is more to them than meets the eye. Were prehistoric humans capable of in-depth scientific knowledge? It appears that it could indeed be the case; for example, the Valle des Merveilles, which is nestled high in the mountains at over 2,000 metres, below majestic Mount Bego contains 35,000 engravings of Prehistoric society; at first they were considered as being mere wall art, however, these engravings may have held a much more significant purpose to man. The engravings of the Valle des Merveilles are believed to have been carved by Bronze Age men between 2,500 B.C. and 1,700 B.C. Many Prehistorians once believed that early man used wall art for Hunting, Magic, Totemism, or Shamanism. However an independent researcher Chantal JeguesWolkiewiez hypothesized a relationship between the way in which cave art animals were depicted and the time of year when the Sun shone on specific animals in caves. This of course does not discredit the earlier theories apart from unifying them into a whole to take much further, which would indicate that ones Prehistoric ancestors had a high level of sophistication.

Chantals example case considered a Salmon with a curved lower jaw, a characteristic of post-spawned fish. During the winter, the sunlight would fall specifically on this fish, concurrent with the season in which spawning occurs. As a result of Chantals research, a new image of prehistoric society emerged. Paleolithic man is believed to have observed the Moon and the Sun to plan for hunting, gathering, and seasonal migrations. Many support the idea that the Lascaux was the world's first map of the sky. Chantal Jeques-Wolkiewiez presented A paper at the International Symposium of Prehistoric Art in Italy, which stated the belief that the cave paintings at Lascaux were records of the Zodiac constellations, fixed stars and the solstice points. Chantal Jeques Wolkiewiez showed that all the constellations of the Zodiac except Aquarius and part of Pisces are represented by the animals of that time. She believed that this together with the presence of the setting Sun demonstrated that the painters were remarkable observers of the sky. If this is indeed the case, early man preceded the Babylonian Astronomers by 10,000 years. [AMAIC comment: "No, there is no way that the Lascaux cave paintings date back as far as 17,000 BC]. To have done this early man would have had to measure distances between stars; however, Jegues Wolkiewiez believes that they achieved this feat by using sticks as rulers, she hypothesises that they were already using the Stars as heavenly guides to find the position of those other stars, which were not visible above the horizon. She and a colleague studied the paintings carefully, keeping in mind that the sky was very different from ours today. They made measurements with an astronomical compass, and conjectured that the rays of the setting Sun at the summer Solstice penetrated into the cave and touched certain paintings. She checked her theory on the summer solstice, June 21st 1999, and saw that the setting Sun hit the entrance for 15 minutes, and lit up the painting of the 'Red Bull,' which appears to point to the Star Aldebaran on the back wall of the Hall of Bulls. Aldebaran is an orange giant Star located about 65 light years away in the Zodiac constellation of Taurus. With an average apparent magnitude of 0.87, it is the brightest Star in the constellation and is

The name Aldebaran is Arabic Al-dabarn, which translates literally as "the follower", presumably because this bright Star appears to follow the Pleiades, or 'Seven Sisters' Star cluster in the night sky.
