INTRODUCING THE NEW

SPRINT GT

THEY DONT GRAB HEADLINES LIKE THE LATEST TRACK-FOCUSED HYPERSPORT BIKES OR HUGEDISPLACEMENT CRUISERS, BUT SPORTS-TOURERS ARE HEROIC ALL-ROUNDERS, AND THE TRIUMPH SPRINT GT COULD WELL BE THE BEST EVER. THE BRAND NEW SPRINT GT AND UPDATED SPRINT ST ARE A CULMINATION OF 20 YEARS OF EVOCATIVE, THREE-CYLINDER TRIUMPH MILE-MUNCHERS. THESE ARE THE JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES THAT MEAN YOU DONT NEED TO DREAM ABOUT A GARAGE FULL OF BIKES TO SATISFY WHATEVER MOOD YOU MIGHT WAKE UP IN. THE SPRINT GT HAS VIRTUALLY ALL THE BASES COVERED. LEISURELY SUNDAY RIDE SHARED WITH A PILLION; LONGDISTANCE, TWO-WEEK, TRANS-CONTINENTAL TOUR OR KNEE-SCRAPING TRACK DAY, THE SPRINT GT DOES IT ALL WITH EASE

THE SPRINT GT IS SET TO DOMINATE THE SPORTS-TOURER MARKET

There are very few bikes that can cover distance with the combined speed, comfort and agility of Triumphs Sprint ST. Everyone who has ridden it knows it lives up to its reputation: a brilliant sportsbike that tours. And the perennially popular Sprint ST has been updated for 2010 and joined by a new model, the Sprint GT. Surprisingly, for a bike that delivers the ideal balance of performance and flexibility, brand new sports-tourers are a rare breed in todays segmented motorcycle world. Pure sportsbikes have become increasingly more focused and hardcore, while tourers have tended to become heavier or taller or both. Triumphs Product Manager, Simon Warburton, agrees, The Sprint GT is a genuine sports-tourer, one of very few available today. Its an all-rounder that allows you to cover big distances in comfort, but still enjoy spirited riding. Surely thats the dream scenario for huge numbers of riders: tour in comfort, to the Pyrenees, or Scotland, or the Isle of Man, or wherever you please, then enjoy the destination you travelled for so many hours to reach when you finally arrive. Its no good riding from A to your once-in-a-lifetime B if the journey has left you, or your pillion, too fatigued to really enjoy it. Triumphs design and development team are driven by the invaluable feedback they receive from existing owners. The comments from thousands of Sprint owners showed there was a great deal of love for the Sprint ST, but also room in Triumphs range for a bike with all the STs spirit, performance and handsome, unmistakable looks but with an even more practical side to it. And that was the nut of the GTs design brief. Improve the bikes practical aspects but without losing the sportiness.

The Sprint GT uses a 130bhp version of the world-renowned 1050cc, 12-valve triple engine, a version of which also powers the Speed Triple and Tiger. But the Sprint family use a unique aluminum beam, twin-spar frame. A glance at the specification sheet shows adjustable suspension and lightweight 17in wheels to make the most of the widest range of tyres available. Despite family similarities to the ST, the GT is being regarded as a brand new model. And youll see why. A completely new rear sub-frame, seat and rear bodywork give it different strengths and character to the ST.The riders ergonomics are identical to the ST, with bars set at a height that allows the spirited riding Simon described, when the conditions allow. But the pillion seat is lower, and the pillion footpegs are both lower and further forward, combining to offer a more relaxed leg position. Also, there wont be a passenger in the world who wouldnt want to grip those ergonomically-shaped grab handles after all, this engine delivers 108Nm (80ft.lbs) of torque. The GTs seat is easily removed with a twist of a key and reveals enough storage space for a U-lock underneath. These changes have been able to be incorporated because the STs under-seat exhaust has been replaced by a lower-level, three-into-one system. Clever hard panniers now come as standard equipment too. The panniers are all new and much improved, Simon Warburton explains. They will each hold an XXL-sized helmet. They are easy to operate and have a high quality feel. They lock with the bikes ignition key and come colour-coded to the bike. The mounting system is also much improved in that the appearance is much neater when the pannier is removed. Instead of external rails, there are simply two discreet mounting points protruding through the rear bodywork. The panniers use our unique mounting system, whereby each pannier has a small amount of freedom to swing, and is joined to the other pannier by a link bar. This system massively improves the stability of the bike when loaded up by decoupling the mass of the luggage from the bike. In effect, this damps out small oscillations before they build up and cause a weave that is noticeable to the rider.

TRIUMPHS SPRINT GT... ITS A MOTORCYCLE FOR RIDERS WHO WANT TO EXPERIENCE EVERYTHING 21ST CENTURY ROAD RIDING OFFERS AND, CRUCIALLY, AT A PRICE FEW OF TRIUMPHS COMPETITORS CAN GET CLOSE TO

If owners require more luggage-carrying capacity there is a matching official Triumph Accessory hard top box. It can swallow a further two XXL helmets on its own. Look, we know you wont be carrying four huge, full-face helmets on your journeys, but try fitting a helmet in your rucksack. Youll struggle. Now youve got an idea just how much luggage you can stuff into the standard panniers and accessory top box, ok? This motorcycle has been designed by long-distance riders for longdistance riders. Simon Warburton, one of the key members of the team that brought the GT to life, is a long-time Sprint owner, going back to the days of the 955i. Hes ridden all over Europe and taken part in track days on the various Sprints he has owned, so he has his own strong views on the requirements of a 21st century sports-tourer. Thats why the GT and ST have an easily accessible 12v power socket, and the accessory top box has another 12v power socket for charging laptops, cameras, mobile phones or any other portable electronics while youre on the move. The heart of the Sprint GT, and every Triumph, is the engine. The 1050cc triple is regarded by owners and journalists as one of the all-time great engines. It has power, reliability and the x factor so few can manage to engineer into a powerplant, soul. And in the GT itll cover 200 miles, quickly, between fill-ups. Because not every journey takes place under blue skies, both Sprints feature new, improved headlights. The ultra-distinctive lens shape remains, but the trio of projector lights are replaced by reflector-style headlights. We are continually testing our existing models and weve developed an even better headlight, says Simon. The performance is much improved, especially on dip beam. The GT also has a slightly longer single-sided swingarm than the ST, with a brand new shock unit. Its remote preload adjuster wheel is easily accessible and designed to be set with your fingertips to suit solo or loaded riding. Front suspension, though externally identical and adjustable for preload, like the ST, has been modified internally to offer even more control under braking. The wheels are a new design too, but with the same 3.5in front and 5.5in rear widths as the ST. Finally, the bodywork around the cockpit has been redesigned with, what Simon describes as More valuable surfaces. He doesnt mean theyre carved from marble. If you start talking to stylists about shape and surfaces theyll talk about adding value to surfaces. These are shapes and contours that are difficult to describe, but when you run your hand over it and see it in the flesh youll feel it. The original ST is good looking, but we needed to move elements of the design on. Triumphs Sprint GT is a bike that proves theres a lot of life, fun, opportunities and experiences waiting for those who enter, or return to, the sports-tourer market. Its a motorcycle for riders who want to experience everything 21st century road riding offers and, crucially, at a price few of Triumphs competitors can get close to.

PILLION ACCOMMODATION Lower seat + grab rails + repositioned pillion footrests = happy pillions. They wont even mind that the Sprint GT can cover 200 miles between fill-ups.

PANNIERS Standard equipment on the Sprint GT. Colour-coded, easy to remove when not in use leaving the most discreet mounting points and locked with the same key as the ignition. Uniquely, Triumphs linked panniers are designed to swing slightly, so they dont upset the handling of the bike.

EXHAUST SYSTEM The low-level three-into-one system has allowed the pillion seat to be lowered and feature a useful amount of under-seat storage.

WHEELS Redesigned to be both lighter and stronger, lowering the unsprung mass and improving handling.

ADJUSTABLE SHOCK Long-stroke shock with remote preload adjuster is designed to give superb pillion ride comfort.

ECU Triumphs latest generation engine management system ensures the Sprint GT has the smoothest throttle response, while also upping power and torque compared to last years ST.

REFLECTOR HEADLIGHTS The distinctive triple headlight of the Sprint family remains but it is updated and much-improved thanks to new reflector lights.

FROM IDEA TO PRODUCTION

DESIGN TEAM LEADER TOM LLEWELLYN SIMPLIFIES TWO TO FOUR YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT INTO FIVE MINUTES

ABS Factory-fitted anti-lock for the last word in braking confidence.

To start, Simon Warburton, the product manager, and Stuart Wood, the principal engineer on the concept side, will agree on a specification for the project taking into account customer feedback. The spec then gets given to the design team, informing them what the project will be. The designers break it down into different components and draw up their own more detailed engineering specification for that component.Theyll describe what material it needs to be and give details of cost and mass (weight) targets. In parallel with this process the stylists are working to a brief to come up with a styling direction. The stylist delivers either a 2D or 3D computer-generated rendering. Its not just a sketch of what would be nice for a bike to be. It represents a manufacturable motorcycle. The stylists are working to dimensions weve given them including: wheelbase, rake and trail, engine size and position. They have the bare bones of a bike that they are styling on top of. Once the styling direction is signed off we work very closely with the stylist to produce a full-size model of the bike. We like to have the engineering sorted by the time the model is finished, so it can be quite a difficult process because every individual component is being worked on. The model looks like a real rideable bike, not a concept. So it has wiring, hoses, mirrors, indicators, to make sure were not kidding ourselves about what it will look like. The model is often started in clay, but normally by the time we get nearer to sign-off we will have made parts from model board, that will look very much like production parts. We use ProEngineer solid modelling package to design the bike. Its a computer aided design package. Triumph employ 165 people in the design and development department. In the early stages of a project well still do calculations on paper to ensure components are strong enough, but by the end of the project well have done Finite Element Analysis to predict the fatigue life of key components. We use computational fluid dynamics programs to reduce the buffeting on riders and pillions. We also check the heat flow onto riders. We first drew the spec of the Sprint GT in October 2007,

ENGINE There are not many more superlatives that could be directed towards Triumphs 1050 triple. Ride one and youll discover why.

we had styling sign-off in July 2008 and the bike was ready to start production in May 2010.
