2012 has been a special year with many unforgettable memories: the LSO appearing at every major summer festival in Europe, as well as in both the opening and closing ceremonies of London 2012. At the Olympics we were delighted to be able to include pupils from East London who have been part of LSO On Track since 2008, and to share the stage with them at the first-ever outdoor BMW LSO Open Air Classics concert in Trafalgar Square, playing Stravinsky with Valery Gergiev to well over 10,000 people there last May. We celebrated 100 years of US touring, the LSO being the first British orchestra there, and the 80th anniversary of Abbey Road Studios, where the LSO made the inaugural recording with Elgar, followed by hundreds of memorable recordings and film soundtracks including Star Wars and a number of the Harry Potter films. The Orchestra also celebrated its 30th season as Resident Orchestra at the Barbican. Having a home in one of the worlds leading arts centres has enabled the LSO to expand its programming, attract the finest artists and build loyal audiences. As partners in the Citys educational cultural quarter of the Guildhall School, the Barbican, and LSO St Lukes, all within ten minutes walk of each other, the LSO has been able to invest in future musical talent the lifeblood of our own music-making and in connecting with the broadest mix of people from our local community. It is with great pleasure that I announce the 2013/14 season to you, our most loyal supporters, first.
Music alchemists: journeys with great conductors So what do great conductors do? The answer is to be found in those cosmic performances, where, in a truly alchemical transformation of elements, something is achieved that goes beyond the egos of the players or the conductors, and the only choice is to follow the musical energy thats being created on stage. The last thing great conductors do is to force musicians to do their bidding. Performances are constructed through patient hours of listening, so that each player has the chance to build up a similar mental, musical and emotional map of the piece. Then listening expands to include the audience, too, so that live concerts arent simply letting a musical experience happen to you, but you are an active, essential part of it. Here are ten of the best. 10 concerts conducted by: Bernard Haitink 10 & 15 Oct 2013 Michael Tilson Thomas 12 & 19 Dec 2013 Sir John Eliot Gardiner 21 Jan, 23 Mar 2014 Sir Mark Elder 4 & 8 May, 12 Jun 2014 Sir Simon Rattle 1 Jun 2014 Singing Sundays This series does exactly what it says on the tin: six Sundays spent listening to great choruses and choral masterpieces. Simon Halsey, the dynamic new Choral Director of the LSO and the London Symphony Chorus, will also be your guide in two singing days so you can participate too, if you want to. Simon has an impressive choral pedigree. He is Chief Conductor of the Berlin Radio Choir, he has been Chorus Director of the CBSO Chorus for over 25 years, and he also holds the positions of Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonics Youth Choral Programme and Director of the BBC Proms Youth Choir. 6 concerts with choruses: Verdi Rigoletto 15 Sep 2013 Berlioz The Damnation of Faust 3 Nov 2013 Haydn The Creation 12 Jan 2014 + Singing Day (4 Jan 2014) Sir Peter Maxwell Davies Symphony No 10 (choral) 2 Feb 2014 Scriabin Symphony No 1 (choral) 30 Mar 2014 Beethoven Mass 22 Jun 2014 + Singing Day

The LSO invites Over the next three years the LSO is inviting a panoply of conductors to the podium to guest conduct them in repertoire synonymous with the Orchestra. The line-up includes established conductors new to the LSO but not to London, such as Daniele Gatti, Thomas Dausgaard and Jonathan Nott, two conductors well-known to the Orchestra as violinists, Leonidas Kavakos and Nikolaj Znaider, plus James Gaffigan and Jaap van Zweden. 9 concerts with 8 new faces: Thomas Dausgaard 25 Sep 2013 Jaap van Zweden 9 Feb 2014 James Gaffigan 13 Feb 2014 Daniele Gatti 27 Apr 2014 Nikolaj Znaider 1 May 2014 Leonidas Kavakos 6 Jun 2014 Fabio Luisi 19 & 22 Jun 2014 Jonathan Nott 29 Jun 2014 Sounds British From its early days the London Symphony Orchestra played with the leading lights of British music, and premiered their works. Elgar, Walton and Britten are three of the big name composers played this season along with two world premieres: Huw Watkins Flute Concerto and Peter Maxwell Davies Tenth Symphony. But did you know that one Polish composer, a naturalised Brit, also inspired composing workshops and new commissions for the next generation now called the Panufnik Scheme, or that there are six LSO Soundhub composers working regularly at LSO St Lukes? 6 concerts featuring Brits: Britten 29 Sep 2013 Walton 30 Jan 2014 Elgar and Maxwell Davies (world premiere) 2 Feb 2014 Panufnik 5 Feb 2014 Huw Watkins (world premiere) 23 Feb 2014 Harrison Birtwistle 20 May 2014
