Vents for Injection Molding

Porous Metal Vents for Injection Molding

During injection molding, by-product gases and trapped air are produced. These gases create voids and porosity causing defects in the finished product. These defects not only affect the appearance of the product, they can also compromise mechanical properties. In this industry, these gases are considered contaminants and need to be removed during the molding operation. By venting the molds, these gases can escape and eliminate the risk of contamination.

Solution:
Motts sintered porous metal disc or cup assemblies provide a solution as vent plugs in molding applications. Sintered porous metals are highly engineered materials consisting of a uniform, interconnected porosity. This uniformity allows precise permeability and provides non-shedding, high temperature and high-pressure characteristics. Sintered porous metal media can be formed into custom net shapes and joined to threaded hardware to create unique assemblies specific to each individual design requirement.

Primary Objectives:
Vent contaminate gases quickly before the material can set-up during the injection molding operation and permanently trap the gases. Vent the mold while preventing loss of material through the vent hole (vents must be plugged with a permeable material). Eliminate impressions or demarcations on the finished product (sometimes caused by vent plug material). Vent plug material must be non-shedding. Withstands high temperatures and high pressures during molding operation. Vent plug material must be non-reactive with the mold material and with injected product (in the event of contact).

Secondary Objectives:
Vent plug to be removable for cleaning if required. Custom vent plug design for retrofit into existing molds.

Features and Benefits:

Uniform Porosity Controlled sintering process produces uniformly sized and evenly distributed pores in media grades ranging from 0.1 to 100m. This provides a large range or permeability to choose from for fast release of trapped gases. Sintered structure holds the porous particles together eliminating the risk of debris contamination from the vent plug. Sintered porous metal characteristics withstand high temperatures even in oxidizing atmospheres. Sintered porous metal, having high tensile strength, is suitable for highpressure operations. In addition to 316LSS, other metal alloys are available for process compatibility. Contamination can be removed by ultrasonic cleaning so vent plugs can be returned to service. Sintered porous metal assemblies can be configured into hardware to create a removable plug where desired. Discs and cups are available in various sizes and media grades.

Considerations:
When selecting a vent plug for a particular application, one needs to consider the volume of gas or air flow that needs to be vented and the area that is available for the vent plug. Mott provides permeability curves to assist the customer in selecting the appropriate vent plug design. It is important to recognize that there is a compromise between venting quickly, and preventing a pattern from being imprinted on the finished product. A coarser grade will vent quickly but leave a pattern. While a finer grade has less chance of leaving a pattern as it will vent slower. Mott has an experienced technical staff to provide support in selecting the correct design for your application.
