Welcome to the ReThink Waste Ambassador Program!

A few years ago, the City discovered that a significant percentage of our residential garbage was comprised of organic waste (kitchen waste) that was being sent to landfill. In an effort to reduce landfill garbage, the City created the Surrey Rethink Waste program which was launched in October 2012 to all single-family households. The program requires households to divert (separate) kitchen waste from their garbage into separate organic waste bins provided by the City which is then delivered to a composting facility where it is processed into a nutrient rich compost and fertilizer. In just 3 short months following the commencement of the Citys Rethink Waste program, our single family households reach the regional 70% waste diversion target. Remarkably, this has translated into a reduction of over 40% of landfill garbage generated by single family households. The City is presently working towards establishing one of the first bio-fuel facilities in North America, where our organic waste collected from residents will be processed into a renewable natural gas that will be used to fuel our waste collection vehicles, creating a closed loop system. Surrey Leads the Way The City of Surreys achievements in waste management through its Rethink Waste program has earned it top honors at a national level. In February 2014, the City was presented with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities award for Sustainable Communities. Surreys best practice approach is quickly gaining recognition by municipalities throughout North America who are working to follow our lead. How Will your Building Contribute? Our next goal is to expand our Rethink Waste program to include Surreys multi -family buildings. Your participation will greatly assist the City in developing a Surrey-wide approach to organic waste diversion.
