n 14 March, adventurer, writer and photographer Sean Fraenkel embarked on a journey to cycle from Musina to Cape Town with his two Jack Russels, Turbo and Tequila. Sean and the dogs are doing this in aid of Pet Empowerment in Townships (PETS), a non-profit organisation in the Western Cape that looks after animals in townships and poor communities. GPS News caught up with him on 27 March, when he was en route between Graskop and Sabie after having spent the night in Pilgrims Rest. After 12 years as a commercial diver, Sean had returned to Cape Town, but soon longed for another adventure. He decided to follow the route from Musina to Cape Town through Lesotho as described in the book Riding the Dragons Spine by David Bristow and Steve Thomas. He calls his adventure the Barking Mad Charity Ride because he is cycling with his Jack Russels. The two dogs ride along in a specially-tailored doggy trailer, but sometimes they enjoy running along the bicycle. I do this as a labour of love, Sean told GPS News. Although he is alone most of the time on his journey with only the dogs for company, he said: So far the people have made this trip. They are so generous. While passing through Sabie, he

He said he hoped to complete the trip in three months as he was trying to avoid the harsh winter conditions in Lesotho. he annual glamorous Miss Sybrand beauty pageant was held at Sybrand van Niekerk High School in Sabie on 27 March. The participants had to compete in two categories: semi-formal and formal. A Mr Personality was also chosen from the guys accompanying the girls on stage. An array of vibrant colours fluttered across the stage. Shernice Grounds classical black dress looked very sophisticated. Hot pink, like the dress Present Khoza wore, and the glittering purple of Mpumi Moyenis dress were also hits. Ellen Mashego made a brilliant white dress look chic, while Natasch du Plessis wore an elegant turquoise dress. Brilliant red on the outfit of Michelle Harrison and the vivacious green of Clarisse Janse van Rensburgs dress also made it across the ramp.
Mr Personality contestants. The guys outfits mostly complemented those of the girls they accompanied on stage. Thabo Ngwenya, Ethan Scrimmiger and Liam Mashego looked as if they stepped from a fashion page. Most of the guys looked quite confident on the stage and it was clear from the cheering who were firm favourites. The beautiful Mpumi Moyeni was chosen as Miss Sybrand. Clarisse Janse van Rensburg and Michelle Harrison were chosen as the two princesses. The Mr Personality title went to Ethan Scrimmiger. Thabo Ngwenya won the Table of the Year title with a beautifullydecorated table.

BRIEWE LETTERS
Sweet lies, eternal hope
The article about old advertisements in the last edition of GPS News reminded me of an advert aired some years ago. When the duel blade for razors was first launched, there was a TV advertising campaign which went roughly as follows. A gorgeous hunk, with a snow white towel round his midriff, was seen rubbing his chin with an expression of unbounded satisfaction. The insert showed that the first blade almost made it whilst the second finished the job to perfection. Good stuff. Today we have the quad blade. Based on the evidence of the advert above, the third and fourth blades are removing two layers of skin. Little wonder that the shelves are packed with bottles of aftershave for sensitive skins. At a time when we are getting increasingly sensitive to environmental issues, consider these further impacts: more plastic, more steel, more energy. What is the solution? Grow a beard so that daily you can allow yourself a warm glow of satisfaction for helping to save the planet and your face. Give the money you save to a deserving charity of your choice. Your daily joy is now complete. I think it was Abe Lincoln who said:
BP staff honesty
Whilst compiling GPS News on Saturday 5 April, the power suddenly went off. My initial reaction was: eish, it must be lightning or load shedding, but no... the pre-paid units had run out. Wanting to buy units to the value of R300 at BP in Sabie, I was told that they do not accept debit cards, and went outside and withdrew R350. Without thinking, I handed the cashier the money, took the slip and went to my vehicle. The cashier, Nella Mashego came running to my vehicle with the balance of R50. GPS News recently also reported about a customer who had left cash at the ATM and was called by BP staff after having investigated on CCTV who the money belonged to. I would like to compliment BP on the calibre of the staff they employ. Thank you, Nella, for your honesty. Valerie Kemp, GPS News

Nie almal Cinderella nie, party Fiona of ... wag never mind.

Even fairytales! Nou moet ek net iemand kry om die verdomde rooi skoentjies oor my tone te wikkel, dans ek set for life!

Toyota Fortuner... An SUV that deserves a test drive. tor plan still active. They can be found from around R250 000 upwards in 4x2 manual form, and most of the depreciation has been absorbed by the previous owner. This will give you the confidence in buying a pre-owned unit, and being a Toyota everything should keep on going right for many years to come. The excellent resale value of a Toyota is legendary, so your investment becomes that much safer. I am officially a Fortuner convert now and I will urge anyone looking at an SUV to test drive a Fortuner. Toyota Fortuner... now I understand!
