oaIs
W &se the various ANSYS MechanicaI mesh controIs to enhance the
mesh for the modeI beIow.
W ProbIem statement:
%he modeI consists of a CAD fiIe representing a soIenoid.
Our goaI is to mesh the modeI using aII defauIts and inspect the resuIt.
Next we wiII add mesh controIs to modify the mesh in various regions of
the modeI.

Assumptions
W Since this is a meshing exercise we wiII not be appIying Ioads or
soIving the modeI. Instead we wiII assume a Iinear static structuraI
anaIysis is to foIIow the meshing operation.
W Note, due to a certain randomness in the nature of meshing, the
actuaI number of eIements generated during the workshop may vary
from machine to machine. %his is normaI.

Project Schematic
1. In the %ooIbox, doubIe cIick
"Static StructuraI" to create a
new anaIysis system.
2. RMB on the "eometry" ceII and
"Import eometry". Browse to
"SoIenoid_Body.stp".
3. DoubIe cIick the "ModeI" ceII to
start the MechanicaI appIication.

W Start by meshing the modeI using aII
defauIts. %his wiII estabIish a "base
Iine" from which we can compare
changes.
4. HighIight the mesh branch, "RMB >
enerate Mesh".

hen mesh generation
compIetes we can view the
mesh and inspect the
statistics in the detaiIs for the
mesh branch.
Note: node/eIement count
may vary sIightIy across
machines/pIatforms.

W Based on our inspection we may decide a
more refined mesh is necessary for our
anaIysis.
5. In the mesh branch detaiIs expand the
"sizing" section and set the "ReIevance
Center" to "Medium.
6. RMB the mesh branch and enerate Mesh.
Mesh Size ControI
%he finer mesh is visuaIIy
obvious. %he detaiIs show an
increase in the number of
eIements as expected.

Mesh Shape ControI
W A cIoser Iook at the mesh shows some anomaIies where certain
faces meet.
W By zooming to the area in question we can see severaI smaII
"sIiver" surfaces are forcing a fine mesh IocaIIy.
W e'II attempt to cIean this up using virtuaI topoIogy.

. Insert the virtuaI topoIogy branch
(highIight the ModeI branch):
a. RMB > Insert > VirtuaI %opoIogy.
W Since it appears that the sIiver area is
cIoser to being tangent to the sides, we
wiII combine these into virtuaI ceIIs.

SIiver
In order to preserve the basic
topoIogy we wiII join pairs of
surfaces into virtuaI ceIIs
rather than trying to combine
aII surfaces together. %he
resuIt wiII be 3 ceIIs per side, 6
in totaI.

8. Create VirtuaI CeIIs:
a. SeIect one of the sIiver surfaces.
b. HoId the C%RL key and seIect
the adjacent surface (as shown

of 6 virtuaI faces and 4 virtuaI edges.
9. Remesh the modeI (highIight the

a. RMB > enerate Mesh.

a much more uniform
mesh with a significant
reduction in eIement
count.
