Introduction to Manual
The manual will be based on several things to help boost a computers performance such as having the
proper software to have it run efficiently. As well as having to defragment the proper disks in the
computer. Other factors can lead to how computers are efficient, such as the living condition of the user
as well as how well the computer is treated. Other things that can affect the performance of computers
is the scheduling of scanning the computer for various viruses. Such as the manual will show. Varies type
of virus can infect your computer such as normal viruses, malware, spyware, etc. The more protection
the user has on a computer the better off the user will be. Therefore, its essential that the user reads
this manual in order for them to be prepared for the proper maintenance of a computer.

This chapter will determine if you actually need to defrag your computer or simply need to
install anti-virus software. All of the steps in this chapter will show the computer user how to
verify if the computer needs to be defragged. Not only will this chapter show the user how to
analyze the disk but also defragment.

Chapter 1
Now before we start to defragment any type of disk we have to understand what type of windows
program the computer is running. The user finds this out by simply checking the sticker that is
near the keyboard or on the hard drive of a desktop computer. First off, what is Disk
Defragmenting?
The definition to disk defragmenting is: The process of consolidating fragmented data on a
volume (such as a hard disk or a storage device) so it will work more efficiently. Disk
Defragmenter is a tool that rearranges the data on your volume and reunites fragmented data so
your computer can run more efficiently.
Here are the steps to analyzing the necessary disks if needed to defragment.
1. You can open the Disk Defragmenter by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type
Disk Defragmenter, and in the lists of results, click Disk Defragmenter.
2. To determine if the disk needs to be defragmented or not, click Analyze disk. If the
administrator password and confirmation are needed, type the password or provide
confirmation.
3. Once Windows is finished analyzing the disk, you check the percentage of fragmentation
on the disk in the Last Run column. If the number is above 10%, you should defragment
the disk.

4. Click Defragment disk. Administrator permission required if you're prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.







Network locations can't be defragmented.
If a disk that you're expecting to see under Current status is not showing up
there, it might be because it contains an error. Try to repair the disk first,
then return to Disk Defragmenter to try again.

This chapter will contain information about installing anti-virus software. As every kind of anti-
virus software varies, as it depends on how effective and at what price the user wants. For this
manual I will be using a free version of Avast! . The user can also purchase the full version of
this software for better protection. Since it is a free version the program itself cannot protect the
computer from every kind of threat for the computer. Which is why the chapter will also provide
the reader another kind of software for protecting the computer from malware, the product is
called Malwarebytes.

This chapter will show the user how to install the free version of Avast! and as well as the free version of
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software to protect your computer. At any point in time the user can choose to
upgrade either of the software to the full version. The most important program to have in your computer first
will be Avast! because itll protect the computer from most viruses.
1. Go to http://www.avast.com/index and go to the download button, and download Avast! Free
Antivirus.
2. Select the Yes option for






3. Follow the instructions to your preference when they are displayed.

4. After installation of Avast! the user should see a screen that resembles this image.

The next software needed to add to a computer will be Malwarebytes because the free version of Avast! will
not protect against malware. The manual will also demonstrate the installation to an individual computer.
1. To download anti-malware software go to https://www.malwarebytes.org/
2. Once on the website, decide what free version the user wants, either small/large business or install each
software program individually.

3. After the individual download you open the program
to install Malwarebytes.








4. Follow the instructions to your preference when they are displayed.
5. After installation a message will appear similar to the window that was displayed before download.
Click Yes
6. This step will allow the user to use Malwarebytes and software will be protecting the system.


Note
When Malwarebytes is running
a scan, running other programs
can slow the computer.
So its best to close all
programs and only leave
Malwarebytes running.

Now this chapter will be including how to manage both software in order to keep an efficient
running computer. Both software are going to be set on a scanning schedule. This chapter will
explain keeping the performance of both software and why they need to be maintained as well as
updated with the most recent software.

The last chapter in the manual will show the user how to create a scanning schedule with Avast! as well as
Malwarebytes.
Avast! Scheduling is easy depending on what you want scanned.
1. Open Avast! And along the left hand side there is a tab that says Scan
2. After you click Scan theres a settings option underlined in the center screen click it














3. After settings is opened along the left hand side, the last option is scheduling, click it.



4. Now, the user can perforate the schedule according to them.

Now its time to show the user how to use a schedule in Malwarebytes
1. Open Malwarebytes and in the settings tab in the top section
2. The user will see options about schedule settings.

Analyze Disk {3}- Because defragmenting a disk volume can take a long time (depending on the
size of the volume, the number of files, the percentage of fragmentation, and the availability of
system resources), you should analyze volumes before defragmenting them to decide whether or
not it is worthwhile to take the time to run the defragmentation process.

Virus- {3 ,5, 7} A piece of code that is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental
effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data.
