English-the single working language of the EU

The need to communicate is characteristic to humans and is has grown rapidly with the
evolution of media and the globalization, that is why having a single working language is the
most efficient solution. Moreover, we are engaged in finding a universal language and
English seems to be the only candidate.
First of all, English first began to spread during the 16th century with British Empire then it
was strongly reinforced in 20th by USA world domination in economic, political and military
aspects and by the huge influence of American movies.
On the other hand, for member states of EU which are non-Anglophone such a solution is not
the best and it does not correspond with the EUs language diversity policy. For example
some of the non-English-speaking EU countries, the following percentages of the adult
population claimed to be able to converse in English in 2012: 90% in the Netherlands, 89% in
Malta, 86% in Sweden and Denmark, 73% in Cyprus and Austria, 70% in Finland, and over
50% in Greece, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Germany. In 2012, excluding native speakers,
38% of Europeans consider that they can speak English (1). Although the expansion of
English has been phenomenal, it has never been the sole widely used language. Three other
languages are used on a scale similar to English: Spanish (350 million), Chinese (1.1 billion)
and Hindi-Urdu (250 million). Other prominent languages are: Arabic (200 million),
Bengali (185 million), Russian (160 million), Japanese (125 million) and German (100
million). However, none of these can match the distribution of English users.
Moreover, we live in a technologized era and the fact that our lives move at such a fast pace
made us find ways in which to simplify as much as we can all the processes we develop in
the everyday life. Thus, we have begun to adopt and take as granted words from foreign
languages and add them in their pure and natural form to our dictionary. The most powerful
impact has been felt in the technical part and informatics, two of the most flourishing
categories at the moment. English has become the business language of today due to the fact
that companies discovered that they can be more cost efficient by outsourcing. Therefore, this
is the main tool used to communicate efficiently and expand their connections all around the
world. It is the trading language of the world to a certain extend. A sound knowledge of
English Language makes an individual to be a successful business man around the world.
In addition to this, English is one of the beautiful and simplest languages in the world. Of
course the concept of easiness is relative. Nevertheless the concept of simplicity is
undeniable: English in an easy language to learn, understand and speak. For instance, this
language uses Latin Alphabet with only 26 basic letters and no diacritics. There are almost
no Inflections. No number or gender inflection for adjectives, articles, adverbs. For adjectives
there is only comparative and superlative, almost only number for nouns.
Also, many people see the ability to communicate and talk with others as one of the major
benefits of learning English. Even outside of a professional environment, people often like to
be able to talk to individuals from around the world. Besides, a tremendous number of
websites are available primarily in English, and anyone who does not understand the
language may have difficulty using them.
In my opinion, English should become the single working language in the UE because it is
easy to learn, it is the language of technology and Internet ,it is already one of the most
popular languages in the world and it is based on the Latin Alphabet.
