Student Learning Outcomes (Goals):
Students will be assigned a planet to research
Information will be gathered from the iPad App Solar Walk and NASA.org
Students will create a detailed outline regarding their planet using iThoughts
Students will learn to visually organize their material
This is in preparation for a pretend travel brochure they will create, enticing people to visit their
planet.
Objectives Content and Technology STANDARDS
Students will be able to identify key elements of
their chosen planet and record them in an outline
using iThoughts on the iPad. Students will research
their planet using Solar Walk and
solarsystem.nasa.gov. Elements to be identified
include:

Distance from the sun
Planet Diameter
Period of Revolution
Period of Rotation
Moons and their names
Composition of planet
Atmosphere
Weather
Average day/night temperature
Namesake
Other interesting facts

Sub-Strand 5: The solar system consists of planets and other bodies that
orbit the Sun in predictable paths. As a basis for understanding this
concept:

Standard a: Students know the Sun, an average star, is the central
and largest body in the solar system and is composed primarily of
hydrogen and helium.
Standard b: Students know the solar system includes the planet
Earth, the Moon, the Sun, eight other planets and their satellites,
and smaller objects, such as asteroids and comets.
Standard c: Students know the path of a planet around the Sun is
due to the gravitational attraction between the Sun and the planet.

Procedure
1. Students will watch a video clip on the planets of our solar system

2. Students will draw from a jar to find out what planet they have been
assigned.
3. Teacher will distribute hand out explaining what information must be
gathered relating to their assigned planet.
4. Teacher will go over the Solar Walk App, explaining how to use the
app, and how to access information on their assigned planet
5. Teacher will go over the NASA website, showing students how to
navigate the site and gather information.
6. Teacher will introduce students to the iThoughts App and show them
how to make an outline containing information gathered on their
assigned planet.
7. Students will be given time to work independently on gathering their
information and completing their outline.
8. Outlines will be emailed to me straight from iThoughts by the end of
the day.
