VIBROCORD
FFT data collector and machine analyzer

VIBCODE compatible

"Just give me something that works!" When asked to name the greatest pitfall to machine condition monitoring, one expert replied, "Instead of making life easier, many modern instruments seem to have 'lost sight of the forest for all the trees': complex technological 'advances' mean more specialist training, more time and effort for measurement - yet often enough deliver results that are either difficult to interpret or do not characterize the actual machine condition." What the maintenance specialist really needs is simply an industrial tool that works. It must give clear, repeatable measurement results, quickly and reliably, without a lot of previous training or experience. VIBROCORD is made to fit the bill: its entire design is truly machineoriented to provide maximum benefit to a wide range of users at the lowest possible cost. It gives the 'power user' all the advanced functions he needs, but perhaps even more important, its operating elements and procedures let nearly any operator collect reliable measurements tailored to the particular machine class and application with no uncertainty or confusion.

The 'low-maintenance' monitoring strategy

Level 2 Level 1

Level 1 Level 2
Trend mode Analysis mode

When the trend rises above tolerance, an FFT spectrum is measured for diagnosis.

Detection vs. diagnosis: Level 1 / Level 2 strategy Most rotating machines don't need frequent vibration frequency analysis for condition monitoring so why bother wasting specialists precious time and effort on unnecessary measurement and data handling? VIBROCORD lets anyone confirm machine health during normal operation (Level 1) based upon specific machine-oriented characteristic overall values. When conditions worsen, the characteristic signal level rises: VIBROCORD automatically switches to its Route Expert mode and records the FFT spectrum (Level 2) to pinpoint the cause of signal elevation. This twolevel strategy makes more efficient use of manpower and data archival, yet ensures full information on machine operating condition.
The reference spectrum taken in 'good' condition allows meaningful comparison.

Why 'characteristic overall values'? In order to deliver reliable results, Level 1 trending values must be based upon the special characteristics of the machine, for example, vibration severity for low-speed machines which require monitoring all the way down to 2 Hz instead of the usual 10 Hz. VIBROCORD trends specific overall values that include all damage frequencies characteristic of a particular machine element, not just the standard RMS vibration level so that when Level 2 is signaled, you know that a significant condition change has occurred.

Minimum overall time and effort

Quick, easy configuration for nonexperts, thanks to predefined knowledge-based measurement setups

Optimum usability
Knowledge-based setups: quick results, accurate comparison Now for the first time ever, VIBROCORD offers a time-saving menu of predefined measurement situations based upon expert knowledge of specific machine types. Beginners can use these setups asis to obtain immediate results; standardized settings allow reliable comparison with previous measurements for diagnosis. And even the expert can reduce setup time by optimizing any desired details before beginning collection - or he can define his own complete set of measurement parameters instead.

Expert guidance for reliable results

VIBROCORD Route Expert collects diagnostic measurements as needed according to momentary machine condition, eliminates follow-up alarm routes

MultiSpectrum optimizes resolution in every frequency range with only one wideband spectrum

2-plane rotor balancing module available optionally

VIBROCORD knowledgebased setups offer a wide selection of standard measurement situations. Each measurement mode - overall value, spectrum and time waveform has its own separate setup list.

Built-in expertise for spectrum evaluation: frequency markers highlight critical areas, general or machine-specific

Overall values tell the whole story at a glance The 'overall value' screen (here shown for ISO vibration severity standards, machine class I) gives a clear overview of the situation. A single glance shows how the current reading stacks up against warning and alarm limits, the last reading taken, and reference values for 'good' operating condition.

True machine-based measurement

Full support of international standards like ISO (alarm levels) and MIMOSA (events), even for special machine types

Characteristic overall values, characteristic spectra for specific machine types

DualMode shows signal stability during measurement by simultaneous display of time signal and FFT spectrum

Adjustable acceleration envelopes according to machine type provide high-reliability bearing diagnosis

'Ref': reference level for 'good' operating condition 'Last': most recent measurement level 'Warn'/'Alarm': warning and alarm levels from threshold file, e.g. ISO standards 'Spec': stored value for comparison with current measurement 'Diff': difference between stored value and current measurement : measured value exceeds warning threshold : measured value exceeds alarm threshold

The 'event' softkey lets you select a standard MIMOSAcompliant machine event and enter a comment to store with the measurement.

Route Expert adapts to current machine condition How does a vibration expert approch machine condition monitoring? When things are running smoothly, he's satisfied to collect overall value trend readings from a minimum of measurement locations. But when an elevated reading spells trouble, he knows on the spot exactly where to collect which types of additional readings and Good condition

Expert assistance
FFT spectrum measurements for accurate machine diagnosis. The VIBROCORD Route Expert feature acts in exactly the same way to adapt its route to current machine condition: it immediately calls for further specific measurements as needed even at additional locations eliminating the need for extra follow-up 'alarm routes'. Bad condition

Route Expert needs only a few characteristic overall values to confirm good operating condition.

When the characteristic overall value rises, Route Expert automatically collects a characteristic spectrum for diagnosis and takes additional measurements at further appropriate locations.

MultiSpectrum: proper resolution, fewer spectra Proper resolution setting can make or break machine diagnosis! By using an appropriate resolution for each different region of the spectrum, MultiSpectrum automatically ensures clear distinction between adjacent spectrum peaks in any situation. MultiSpectrum therefore provides optimum resolution with just one wideband spectrum at effective resolution of up to 8960 lines! The experienced user may adjust the overall range and number of lines per division as desired.

High Resolution

Medium Resolution

Low Resolution

Df = up to 0.03 Hz
In the low-frequency range, high resolution is needed to clearly distinguish spectrum peaks for example, to distinguish between mechanical problems (e.g. unbalance at 49.97 Hz for a machine at 3000 RPM) and electrical ones (seen at 50 Hz mains frequency).

Df = up to 0.31 Hz
In the medium-frequency range, the spectrum is recorded with medium measurement resolution, e.g. to analyze gear mesh.

Df = up to 3.1 Hz
In the high-frequency range, relatively low resolution generally suffices, e.g. in order to monitor the bearing signal range.

Evolutionary transducers

Freedom of choice The TIPTECTOR probe is ideal for hand-held measurement of FFT vibration spectra all the way up to 2 kHz and high-frequency shock pulses for reliable evaluation of anti-friction bearing condition and pump cavitation. Our magnetic probes (not shown) offer easy temporary mounting. Patented Tandem-Piezo industrial accelerometers are available for permanent installation in remote locations, and bonded mounting offers the perfect solution for thin-walled housings. Ask about our full range of other sensor products as well, including: n RPM probes, n Temperature sensors, n Remote switches, n Cables, conduits, adapters, n Mounting tools, etc.

VIBCODE Positive ID Location Machine number Measurement types Alarm limits FFT spectra
VIBCODE Eliminates trending errors Mixed-up measurement locations and missing readings can mean expensive remeasurement or, even worse, fatal trending errors but now there's a better way: the rugged VIBCODE transducer frees you from fixed routes by automatically reading the location of specially-encoded measurement studs. VIBROCORD then knows the exact types and setups of measurements to collect, including FFT spectra if machine condition readings exceed specified alarm limits. A simple twist of the transducer assures accurate trending and reliable broad-band spectrum measurements including shock pulse readings.

Rugged ABS case (included) with contoured foam lining withstands years of daily industrial use.

The data collector

Rugged nylon carrying pouch has extra pockets for probes and accessories; rubber-coated housing is waterproof and shockproof.
