Bought Me a Cat (3

rd
grade)

Submitted by: Adam Martin
for Grade Level(s) 3

Objectives:
TSW learn to perform an arpeggiated drone
TSW perform on various instruments
TSW perform individually, in small groups, and in a large ensemble
TSW create verses of a song based on a fixed pattern

Lesson Plan:
Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):
1. Perform entire song for students as a welcome with hand signs.
Process:
1. Teach first verse by wrote one phrase at a time through echo
imitation, and then teach the order of the animals.
2. Teach or review the concept of arpeggiated drone using F-C-F-C on the
bass xylophone and metallophone.
a. In the context of this song, make sure the students stop on
the right notes at the right time (C on the word tree at the
end of each verse, start with F on the word cat in the
chorus).
3. Supplement animal sounds with various instruments.
a. Split the students into at least 9 groups (one group to be the
chorus and the cat, a group for each of the other seven
characters, and a group to play the drone).
b. Select/Assign instruments for each section of the orchestra
representing one of the animals in the song. The orchestration
suggested in this outline may be a good place to start, but it
can be greatly beneficial to allow students to brainstorm and
choose their own instruments for each sound. You may want to
provide 2-3 options for each animal to ensure that the sound is
properly represented (pitched v. unpitched, high v. low, etc.).
Accommodations:
1. Special Needs students should receive preferential assignments based on abilities. If
the student needs something to shake one time, have the student play the bells for the
horse. In the same example, a gifted student can be given the leadership role of helping
the special needs student to play at the right time as a section leader.
2. Allow ELLs to use native words in the extension lesson involving writing new lyrics.
Assessment/Evaluation:
1. Assess the arpeggiated drone concept on a small group, close
observation basis. The full performance can be recorded and assessed
by the class.

Rationale: This lesson, built around
the folk tune, Bought Me a Cat, is
designed to teach the concept of
arpeggiated drone and provide a
practice medium in an ensemble setting
with various programmatic instruments.
