Functionalist approach
Assumimos nossa opo por uma perspectiva terico-metodolgica funcionalista de
anlise da categoria modalidade porque estamos convencidos de que esse vis nos
permite flagrar as formas da lngua em uso o que significa a possibilidade de transitar
da forma lingustica a seu significado dentro de um dado contexto e nos permite
alcanar nosso intento; a saber: contribuir ao entendimento do elo entre a subcategoria
modalidade dentica e a construo da argumentao. (Menezes 2011)

The domain of evaluation
The domain of evaluation corresponds to the different types of perspective reflected in a
modality (Butler 2003): facultative, deontic, volitive, epistemic and evidential.

The target of evaluation
The target is that part of the utterance which is affected by the modality. (Butler 2003)
This may be a participant (an individual or an institution - specified), an event (non
specified), or a proposition.


Deontic values: mandatory and prohibited, going by acceptable, permitted
and unacceptable.

Depending on the speakers behavior, he/she can include or exclude
himself/herself of the target.

Linguistic modal deontic expressions in political speech are usually found in
affirmative and negative statements, with verbs in imperative modals.

The modal deontic sequences can be positioned, in the speech, in the initial
words of the speaker, in the speakers point of view, or in the final words of
the speaker.
