GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Lab-Volt Power Electronics Devices are used in the
Power Electronics Training System (Model 8032) and in
the Lab-Volt Renewable Energy Training Program. They
can also be added to the 0.2 kW Electromechanical
Training System to allow training in power electronics.
The Power Electronics Devices are used to filter and

convert electrical power flowing in electric circuits. They

come as half-size EMS modules equipped with a steel
front panel. Internal electrical components are identified
on the module front panel by silkscreened symbols and
terminated by 4 mm safety banana jacks.

Model 8325 Smoothing Inductors

Model 8326 Three-Phase Filters

The Smoothing Inductors module, Model 8325, consists

of two chokes especially designed to smooth current
variations occurring in thyristor (silicon-controlled rectifier
or SCR) circuits. Each choke or inductor has two
separate identical windings, terminated on the front
panel by 4 mm safety banana jacks. The inductors can
be connected in series or parallel to show the effect of
varying the inductance value on filtering. They can also
be used as an inductive load in AC and DC circuits.

The Three-Phase Filters, Model 8326, is used to filter

the three-phase signals from power electronics
applications. It consists of three inductors, each in-line
on their respective line, and a set of three
wye-connected capacitors. A connection can be made
directly to the center point of that wye connection or you
can use a supplementary capacitor in series with that
center point.
Model 8326-A Line Inductors

Model 8325-A Filtering Inductors/Capacitors

The Filtering Inductors/Capacitors module,

Model 8325-A, consists of two separate filters: one for
low frequency and one for high frequency. The low
frequency filter consists of a inductor and a polarized
capacitor. The high frequency filter consists of two
inductors and a non-polarized capacitor.
All connections are through 4 mm safety banana
jacks mounted on the front panel.

The Line Inductors, Model 8326-A, consists of three

separate inductors to be connected in series in a
three-phase circuit.

Model 8835 Insulated DC-to-DC Converter

The Insulated DC-to-DC Converter, Model 8835,

converts a low-voltage DC source, like the Battery Pack,
Model 8802, into a high-voltage DC output suitable for
AC conversion. This type of converter (push-pull) can be
found in most switched-mode power supply and
commercial inverters. This converter consists mainly of
two power MOSFETs and their respective drivers, an
high-frequency power transformer and a full-wave diode
bridge on the output side. The MOSFETs can be
controlled using an external controller or the digital
outputs of the Data Acquisition and Control Interface,
Model 9063.

lower sources, through the use of a toggle switch. A

switching control section allows 0-5 V pulse signals from
either the Data Acquisition and Control Interface, Model
9063, the Chopper/Inverter Control Unit, Model 9029, or
any compatible 0-5 V control unit, to be applied to the
gating circuits of the power MOSFETs. The signals are
input in the MOSFET Chopper/Inverter module through
a 9 pin connector. Six miniature banana jacks in this
section are used as test points to monitor the pulse
control signals using an oscilloscope. These jacks can
also be used to inject 0-5 V pulse signals from an
alternate control unit, as well as to inhibit each gating
circuit. The MOSFET Chopper/Inverter module also
includes a synchronization output to trigger an
oscilloscope when observing the switching control
signals as well as a switching control disable input that
allows all six MOSFETs to be switched off.
Model 8837-B IGBT Chopper/Inverter

Model 8837 MOSFET Chopper/Inverter

The MOSFET Chopper/Inverter, Model 8837, consists of

six power Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect
Transistor (MOSFET) devices mounted in a half-size
EMS module. Each individual MOSFET is protected
against a variety of severe operating conditions, such as
short-circuits, overvoltage, overcurrent, and overheat. All
drains and sources of the MOSFETS are terminated on
the front panel by color-coded, 4 mm safety banana
jacks. To reduce the number of external connections, the
upper drains can be connected together as well as the

The IGBT Chopper/Inverter, Model 8837-B, consists

of 7 insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) mounted in
a half-size EMS module. Six IGBTs are used to
implement choppers and inverters. These IGBTs are
protected against a variety of severe operating
conditions, such as short-circuits, overvoltage,
overcurrent, and overheat. The seventh IGBT and a
dumping resistor allow smooth dissipation of excess
energy at the DC bus. The dumping circuit can be
activated through the use of a toggle switch on the front
panel. The module switching control section allows
0/5 V pulse signals from either the Data Acquisition and
Control Interface, Model 9063, the Chopper/Inverter
Control Unit, Model 9029, or any compatible 0/5 V
control unit, to be applied to the gating circuits of the
IGBTs. The signals are input in the IGBT
Chopper/Inverter module through a 9 pin connector. Six
miniature banana jacks are used as test points to
monitor the pulse signals using an oscilloscope. These
jacks can also be used to inject 0/5 V pulse signals from
an alternate control unit, as well as to inhibit each gating
circuit. The IGBT Chopper/Inverter module also includes
a synchronization output to trigger an oscilloscope when

observing the switching control signals as well as a
switching control disable input that allows all six IGBTs
in the chopper/inverter section to be switched off.

Model 8842 Power Diodes

Model 8841 Power Thyristors

The Power Thyristors module, Model 8841, consists of

six power thyristors (SCRs) mounted in a half-size EMS
enclosure. Each individual thyristor is protected against
overcurrents and short-circuits. All the anodes and
cathodes of the thyristors are terminated on the front
panel by color-coded, 4 mm safety banana jacks. To
reduce the number of external connections, the most
typical thyristor configurations can be achieved through
the use of two toggle switches on the front panel. A firing
control section allows six 0-5 V pulse signals from either
the Data Acquisition and Control Interface, Model 9063,
the Thyristor Firing Unit, Model 9030, or any compatible
0-5 V control unit, to be applied to the gating circuits of
the thyristors. The signals are input in the Power
Thyristors module through a 9 pin connector.
Six miniature banana jacks in this section are used as
test points to monitor the firing control signals using an
oscilloscope. They can also be used to inject 0-5 V pulse
signals from an alternate firing unit, as well as to inhibit
each gating circuit. The Power Thyristors module also
includes a synchronization output to trigger an
oscilloscope when observing the firing control signals as
well as a firing control disable input that prevents all six
power thyristors from being fired.

The Power Diodes module, Model 8842, consists of

six power diodes mounted in a half-size EMS enclosure.
Each individual diode is protected against overcurrent
and short-circuits by a thermal-magnetic circuit breaker.
All the anodes and cathodes of the diode are terminated
on the front panel by color-coded, 4 mm safety banana
jacks. The diodes are interconnected in three groups of
two, i.e., one group for each phase of the power supply.
To reduce the number of external connections on the
front panel, the upper cathodes can be connected
together as well as the lower anodes, through the use of
a toggle switch.
Model 8842-A Rectifier and Filtering Capacitors

The Rectifier and Filtering Capacitors, Model 8842-A,

consists of one three-phase bridge rectifier and two
separate capacitors in a half-size EMS enclosure. The
bridge enable the user to convert a three-phase voltage
input and convert it into an unfiltered DC voltage. This
DC voltage can then be filtered using the polarized
capacitors (each one protected by a diode). All
connections are made on the front panel through
color-coded, 4 mm safety banana jacks.
