CHAPTER 01

INTRODUCTION

1.1- OBJECTIVE

To carry out analysis and design of a hospital building by manual calculations.
To carry out analysis and design of hospital building by software SAP2000.
To compare the results of manual and computer aided analysis and design.

1.2- SCOPE

The project will help us in making our concepts of structure analysis and design more
strong.
It will help us in application of all our learned concepts about structures.
After completing this project we shall be able to make analysis and design of almost
any type of building, so it will be really helpful in the field.
We will be working on software (SAP2000), which we didnt learn before, so we
shall be able to carry out computer aided design and analysis of any type of building.
Detailed design of all components of a building e.g. long span halls, column, etc. for
developing basic concept of analysis and design and for getting complete idea of
designing of a complete RCC structure. This project will be helpful in getting on idea
of analysis and design of commercial building being situated in Pakistan.

1.3- BUILDING STRUCTURE
We are designing a multi-storey hospital building including basement. The name of
hospital is Welfare Cancer/Cardiac Hospital Under The Management of Rehmat Nazir
Trust, Situated at Khewat No. 48,128 Khatoni No. 81, 317, 330, 326, Khasra o. 748, 784
Mouza Atu Asal, Behind Ferozepur Road Lahore. Each storey is 9.5feet high. Basement
is reserved for Radiology, Toilets, Storage area, Blood Bank, Administration and

Pathology. Covered area of Basement is 20,425 Sft. Ground floor is reserved for
Reception, Kitchen, Emergency, Labor/Nursery, Toilets and Ambulance Parking area.
Covered area of Ground floor is 21,867 Sft. 1
st
floor has Operation Theatres, Gynae ward,
Surgical ICU, Class room for 140 Students, Offices, Washrooms and Toilets. Covered
area of first floor is 20,604 Sft. 2
nd
floor has private rooms, Female Ward, Male Ward,
waiting hall, Toilets and cafeteria. The covered area of 2
nd
floor is 21,016 Sft. Building
has all the architectural aspects as well.
1.4- CONCEPT DESIGN OF STRUCTURE
"A functional design can promote skill, economy, conveniences, and comforts; a non-
functional design can impede activities of all types, detract from quality of care, and raise
costs to intolerable levels." Hardy and Lammers
A simple building can be define as an enclosed space by walls with roof, food, cloth and
the basic needs of human beings. Hospitals are the most complex of building types. Each
hospital is comprised of a wide range of services and functional units. These include
diagnostic and treatment functions, such as clinical laboratories, imaging, emergency
rooms, and surgery; hospitality functions, such as food service and housekeeping; and the
fundamental inpatient care or bed-related function. This diversity is reflected in the
breadth and specificity of regulations and codes.
Hospital building attributes can be as follow:
Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness
Flexibility and Expandability
Therapeutic Environment
Cleanliness and Sanitation
Accessibility to different areas of hospital
Controlled circulation
Sustainability
Security

1.5- METHODS USED
We are using all the manual methods that we have learnt during our 8 semesters.
We are using software SAP2000.
We are also using other methods by using internet.

1.6- LOAD DETAILS
The following is the minimum design live loads for a hospital building design.
Occupancy Uniform (psf) Concentrated (lb)
Operating Rooms & laboratories 60 1000
Private rooms 40 1000
Wards 40 1000
Corridors above first floor 80 1000
