NTI Shadow® FAQS
Q1. I set up my backup job to backup my C: drive but when the backup is done I get a
bunch of errors. What do these errors mean?
A1. Shadow is a file level backup program and is not designed to backup your entire system.
However if you choose the entire C: drive Shadow will try to backup every file it can but any files
that are in use or locked by the system will not be accessible. Thus Shadow will report the files it
was unable to backup.
Q2. I set my backup job to save all revisions where do I find older versions of my file?
A2. The files will be in a folder named Revision in the same location as your backup files.
Q3. I set up my backup job to backup whenever there is a change. Now if I reboot my
computer do I need to restart my backup?
A3. Shadow will automatically start and begin monitoring when the computer is booted and will
be docked in the taskbar.
Q4. I have set up my backup job but I forgot to include one of my document folders,
do I need to create another job?
A4. Not necessarily. You can create another job but you can also go in and edit your current job
to add the additional folder.
Q5. I set up my backup job to backup anytime anything changes but when I delete a
file from the source folder it doesn’t delete it from my backup folder, why?
A5. When setting up your backup job in the File Revisions screen you need to go into the Options
and select the option to “delete the file on the backup destination when the file is deleted on
your PC”. By default its set not to delete.
Q6. My log file is getting really big how can I clear the log?
A6. The log file (Shadow.log) is located in the root of your user name under Documents and
Settings simply delete that file and Shadow will generate a new log file. Unfortunately you are
not able to edit the existing log file.
Q7. I tried to view the log file and I keep getting “The C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\NTI-Shadow\Shadow.log file is too large for the Notepad.
Use another editor to edit the file”. What does this mean?
A7. This indicates that the log file is too big to be viewed by the notepad and you must either
clear the log file or you can use Microsoft WordPad or Microsoft Word to view it. To clear the log
file please refer to the FAQ above.
Q9. I get an error message that states “The following source folders or files from the
job do not exist” and then it lists a bunch of files. What does this mean?
A9. This indicates that the files and/or folders you selected to be backed up are no longer in the
same location. Please check your files and folders and make sure they are there or edit your
backup job to reflect the changes you have made.
Q10. I am setting up my backup job and it doesn’t allow me to use the continuous
mode and I keep getting this message “A file or folder is not stored on your PC has
19
been selected. Because the file changes cannot be monitored, the first option under
‘Schedule your Backup’ has been disabled.” What does this mean?
A10. This indicates that the files you have selected to backup are not on your local PC, you
probably selected a network location and if the files are not on your local PC they cannot be
monitored in real-time for changes so you cannot use the continuous mode you must set your
backup to be run on a schedule.
Q11. Since I upgraded to Windows Vista, NTI Shadow has been closing down after
being in use for a few minutes or won’t start at all.
A11. This usually happens when the program has become unstable and needs to be reinstalled.
Uninstall the program, reinstall, and make sure you have the most current update available for
Shadow.
Q12. I wish to install NTI Shadow on my Windows Vista machine (the original was
used on an XP machine that is being replaced). When I run the upgrade program on
the Vista machine it stops and says it cannot find the original program and I only
have the option to quit setup.
A12. You must first install the original version of Shadow then install the upgrade.
Q13: Shadow does not seem to be recognizing the external hard drive as a backup
option.
A13: Make sure that you plug in the external hard drive and power it on before starting Shadow.
Also, check My Computer to verify the drive is detected by Windows; you may need to initialize
or format the drive through the Disk Manager in Windows before it will be recognized by the
system. Then Shadow will be able to see it.
Q14: While installing Shadow the installation wizard starts, I accept the license
agreement, and I enter my name. But the installation wizard does not enable the
next button, it remains grayed out.
A14: After your name you also need to fill in a company name. If you are not installing Shadow
on a company PC then input something like “Home” or “Office” then you will be able to click next.
