Just before 9 a.m.

last
Monday morning in the
city council chambers at
City Hall, before a stand-
ing-room- only crowd,
St. Clair Shores officially
got a new police chief,
Todd Woodcox.
The installment cere-
mony made the transi-
tion for Woodcox com-
plete after serving as the
citys interim police chief
since the retirement of
former top cop, Michael
Walleman, more than
three months earlier.
Weve seen some re-
markable changes in the
short time hes even been
the acting interim chief,
City Manager Phillip
Ludos said. Im pretty
impressed with the direc-
tion hes taking right
now.
Although the change
from Interim to perma-
nent Chief of Police may
seem like a small thing to
many, the implications
are far-reaching and give
Woodcox the ability to
make changes in the de-
partment, he said.
As far as day-to-day
operations, not much is
going to change,
Woodcox said. Ive al-
ready been doing the job
of chief since late
January. However, now
that we know who will be
holding the office of chief
for the next several
years, Ill be more free to
be able to make larger
changes to the depart-
ment that I can see
through for the next sev-
eral year. I was hesitant
to make those kinds of
changes before today.
The new chief wouldnt
go into specifics, but
hinted at changes in
command staff, and per-
sonnel in terms of posi-
tions.
There still is the issue
of filling the office of
Deputy Chief, he said. I
cant begin shaking up all
my staff until I know who
is going to be in that of-
fice, but were going to
start moving in that di-
rection.
These types of admin-
istrative decision are par
of the course as
Woodcox tackles the job
of Police Chief, and the
adjustment from police
officer to police adminis-
trator has, at times, been
challenging.
I didnt have a full
grasp of it until I actually
starting doing it,

Change is a constant.
And, things are chang-
ing here at the St. Clair
Shores Connection news-
paper as well.
For regular readers,
youll notice many differ-
ences in the recent weeks
to your paper. Some of
these are subtle and un-
derstated, while others are
very noticeable.
Nonetheless, change
will continue.
I believe that if youre
not evolving, if youre not
adapting, youre falling be-
hind, and each of you de-
serves better than that
from your community
newspaper.
And thats exactly what
the St. Clair Shores
Connection is a com-
munity newspaper.
In an era when informa-
tion is literally a click of a
mouse away, newspapers
are losing their footing
and many have simply
folded up shop and gone
the way of the 8-track
player and cassette deck.
This is the reality of the
business, of the industry,
but this publication is
bucking that trend.
And, honestly, our abili-
ty and willingness to
change is part of the rea-
son why.
What does this mean?
Simply put, it means the
Connection belongs to
each of you, the readers,
and were changing every
day to make this happen.
It belongs to the city
council, the library and the
city officials of St. Clair
Shores.
It belongs to Lake
Shore, Lakeview and
South Lake school dis-
tricts.
It belongs to the non-
profits and the for-profits,
to the home businesses
and the big businesses.
It belongs to every fiber
that weaves itself through
the fabric of St. Clair
Shores, regardless of how
big or how small.
It belongs to you.
Our goal is to make the
St. Clair Shores
Connection newspaper
part of this amazing quilt
of community.
In order for that to hap-
pen though, it, we, have to
interact, to touch, to get
through to all of you.
There has to be a level of
trust, a level of respect,
and a level of communica-
tion that is unique to com-
munity newspapers.
It has to be a two-way
street.
What each of you think
is important. It matters.
But it only matters if you
let me know that it does.
We heard the call for
high school sports cover-
age, and now, the
Connection has sports
coverage.

Located at the former site of Stahls
Automotive Museum, the Detroit Arsenal
of Democracy Museum is dedicated to the Detroit au-

efforts to defend the nation.
An open house celebration is held from 9:30 to 5
p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the museum, 22960
Industrial Drive West, St. Clair Shores.
With many historic vehicles, World WarII historical
displays and re-enactors, the grand opening is a
moving tribute to all those who have worn the na-
tions uniform and the workers who toiled tirelessly
in building the vehicles and equipment that made
Detroit The Arsenal of Democracy.
Notable vehicles on display include Gen. Dwight D.
Eisenhowers Cadillac limousine staff car, 1944 M20
armored utility car, 1942 Villys Jeep with mounted
bazooka, 1944 Sheran tank and the militarys 1070
Heavy Equpment Transpoter.
Highlights include a Vendors Village military
and historical artifacts sale, a turn at firing a .30 cali-

Woodcox said. Its been
a crazy-steep learning
curve, but Ive had unbe-
lievable support from
City Hall and from my
staff. Without the crew
that I have, without Phils
(Ludos) help here. I
would not have made it
past these past three
months.
Its been a very inter-
esting change going from
primarily being a police
officer with some admin-
istrative responsibility to
now, 99 percent of the
time, Im an administra-
tor instead of a police of-
ficer. I still get out on the
street during my lunch
break, and I make a few
traffic stops here and
there, but that wasnt a
surprise. I knew it was
coming. Thats been the
most difficult part of the
transition.
According to members
of the City Council,
Woodcox has handled
these challenges with
poise and grace, and each
took a moment during
last Mondays meeting to
congratulate the new
chief in their remarks.
Ive been very im-
pressed with our new
chief since he took over
the responsibilities in late
January, Councilman
John Caron said. I look
forward to working with
him in the future.
I also, and I think ev-
eryone has, been im-
pressed with his accessi-
bility, Councilwoman
Candice Rusie added.
Congratulations to
him.
We heard the call for
more and larger photos,
and now, our photos are
center-stage of each pub-
lication.
More positivity. More
features. Stories that
stretch beyond the city
boundaries were all
heard and are all part of
the changes taking place.
We have a team of top-
notch and experienced
writers, including Bob St.
John, Ann L. Fouty and
Brad Lindberg, and each
one brings a new and
fresh perspective to the
city.
Im at as many func-
tions and events as possi-
ble, camera in hand,
looking for that photo
opportunity and making
sure that each shot is re-
flective of the event and
the community.
Were not the New
York Times or the Wall
Street Journal, and Im
proud to say that, actual-
ly.
There is always a place
in the Connection for the
news of the city, and
there always will be.
In fact, the front page
each week will likely be
full of headlines reflect-
ing this news, but the
newspaper is, and al-
ways will be, a communi-
ty paper.
That means there will
be photo stories of the
parade and the fire-
works.
There will be touching
features on local resi-
dents and events.
There will be business
profiles, ribbon cuttings,
and Pet of the Week fea-
tures.
There will be previews
of community events and
charity functions.
Most importantly, how-
ever, you, the communi-
ty, will be involved.
Getting involved isnt
nearly as hard as you
might think.
Interact with me on
Twitter (@scsconnec-
tion), send in photo-
graphs of sports teams
and events ( I cant be ev-
erywhere, despite how
hard I try to be), and
send in your birth an-
nouncements and en-
gagements and business
promotions.
A community newspa-
per is about community
pride and dont be shy to
express that to me.
There have been
changes here at the
Connection, and those
wheels of change always
will be in motion.
That said, the one con-
stant will be each of you,
and your value to this
publication.

It pretty much lasts

St. John said the com-

he expects that to

The criteria is that
you have to volunteer

And I think after the

Each kayak is promi-

Lake St. Clair is a

the lake clean by letting
them see how much
they can enjoy it in a

versary.
A slate of 19 metro
Detroit interior decorating
firms with more than 30
designers, decorators,
landscapers and artists
transformed the empty
house with character into a
show piece. Modern ideas
and pallets were intro-
duced but the original am-
biance was maintained for
the JLDs Designers Show
House at 1007 Bishop,
Grosse Pointe Park.
Additionally, six profes-
sional landscapers pruned,
planted and enhanced the
grounds. A boutique,
greenery and caf offer op-
portunities for shopping
for the May event. The
boutique, located in the
basement, features famil-
iar Grosse Pointe artists,
such as Jane McFeeley,
Shelley G. Schoenherr,
Leslie Kujawski Carr and
Jenny Elliott and jewelers
Julia Keim and Janet
Wisner, among others.
We are delighted to be
able to showcase so many
talented interior designers
at this years designers
show house, as well as the
top landscape teams in the
area, who are making the
outside of the house just as
beautiful as the inside,
said JLD president Cristina
Garberding. We picked a
very special house for our
centennial year and this
group of designers, decora-
tors and landscapers are
really pulling out all the
stops to present a very spe-
cial house for the public.
The more than 9,000
square-foot Tudor house
was built in 1921 for the
family of Michael Joseph
Murphy, MJ, a Detroit
banker and businessman.
Early in his career, he
owned the Murphy Chair
Co. in Detroit, which, in the
late 19th century, was one
of the largest furniture
manufacturers in the coun-
try. The home features
large rooms, eight fireplac-
es, five family bedrooms,
leaded glass windows,
original wood paneling
and a loggia overlooking
the gardens.
Seventy-year-old
Murphy and his wife,
Elizabeth, commissioned
the house to create an invit-
ing home for their five chil-
dren and their families to
visit. Two other children,
Blanche and Harold, never
married and lived in the
house with their parents.
The steeply pitched roof,
patterned brick work and
decorative chimneys hous-
es a non-Tudor interior. The
interior colonial style has
glass double doors leading
to each first floor room
from the decidedly mascu-
line library, where poems
Murphy wrote will be on
his desk, to the loggia, a
womans retreat focusing
on a blue cushioned confi-
dante sofa. Gail Urso of
Urso Designs in Grosse
Pointe Park had the chal-
lenge of refreshing the log-
gia, creating a room where
the outdoors could be en-
joyed without being out-
doors.
The loggia is built into
the structure, which is
common in Italy, she said.
It has two brick walls and
two walls with screens.
Her inspiration, she said,
were birds.
There were 20 cardinals
on the trellis, Urso said
when she first visited the
house.
From that visual, Urso
created a room with live
plants, a dining table and
cushioned chairs with in-
door-outdoor fabric. The
sound of trickling water in
a copper garden sculpture
provides the background
as guests enjoy looking at
the large yard.
Jeanine M. Haith of
Showhouse Interiors of
Grosse Pointe chose the
kitchen to give herself a
challenge.
As a designer, Ive typi-
cally been invited into cli-
ents houses to provide pro-
fessional design assistance
for living rooms, family
room, dining room or bed-
room. And when it comes
to kitchens, clients often
think they have to do a
complete re-do to drastical-
ly change or update the
space. I wanted to demon-
strate with a little profes-
sional assistance, a kitchen
can be transformed with-
out a complete re-do, her
e-mail said.
She worked around win-
dows and doors, each with
a different pane or tran-
som.
My solution was to
mask the doors/windows
and balance the room with
floor to ceiling sheer win-
dow treatments that flank
the fireplace/shelving
units. The draperies pro-
vide a softness to the space
and allow light to filter into
the kitchen and balances
against the black wallpa-
per, Haith continued.
She used script print
wallpaper, black with white
script.
I wanted to elaborate on
the notion the kitchen is of-
ten known as the hub of a
house. So just think, If on-
ly walls could talk, just
imagine the stories they
could share about the lives
of those that have passed
through over the years. So
the script wallpaper repre-
sents this notion and illus-
trates the thought that the
walls have their own writ-
ten journal.
Diane Woolsey, D.J.
Kennedy and Ray Vuia
have done 15 JLD show
houses and this year they
chose the dining room for
its spaciousness and light.
The windows made us
want to create a bright hap-
py room, so instead of us-
ing cream or green from

May is national skin cancer
awareness month. Melanoma,
the most serious type of skin can-
cer, is a potentially fatal cancer of
the pigment-producing cells in
the skin. Melanoma can appear
suddenly and without warning,
but it can also develop in an ex-
isting mole. When detected and
treated early, melanoma is cur-
able. However, advanced mela-
noma can spread to the lymph
nodes and internal organs and
can be fatal.
Te overall incidence of mela-
noma has increased signifcantly
over the last 4 decades. Te
American Cancer Society esti-
mates that in 2014 approximate-
ly 76,000 people will have a new
melanoma diagnosis and about
12 percent will be fatal.
Although melanoma can oc-
cur in any race and skin type, the
lighter your skin, hair and eyes
are, the more easily you sunburn,
the greater your risk for mela-
noma becomes. Excessive sun
exposure (or tanning booth use)
and sunburns whether as a child,
teenager, or adult, is the most
preventable risk factor for mela-
noma. Other risk factors include
having a family relative who has
had melanoma, having many
moles or a history of atypical or
dysplastic moles, and a personal
history of other types of cancers
like thyroid or breast cancer.
Early detection is essential.
Monthly self-skin exams and an-
nual full skin exams with a der-
matologist are recommended.
People with a history of mela-
noma may be seen more ofen in
the frst fve years as they have a 1
in 20 chance or developing a new
melanoma. If you have a chang-
ing mole or a new mole, make an
appointment to see your derma-
tologist as soon as possible.

lignant melanoma, contact

Mothers Day
HAPPY
al to amplify the sun-
shine, Woolsley said.
The team began with a
pink, coral and green
French Aubusson rug, she
said, using coral for the
walls.
The shade of coral was
difficult to choose because
we wanted something
bright and saturated, not
garish as some pinks can
be, Woolsey said.
Furnishings are a mix.
She said they used a
Continental dining table,
French chairs, a modern
buffet, an English break-
front and a china cabinet
with an Asian flare, so you
can take away from many
different view points.
Upstairs, Kristin Ross of
Finish by Red Dcor of
Grosse Pointe took a room
painted in deep green and
transformed it into a pink
sisters suite.
The rooms concept was
to combine similar yet op-
posite and complementa-
ry ideas.
I chose vintage textiles
and classic motifs to give
the room a timeless ap-
peal, she said in an e-
mail. I knew this space
should not take itself too
seriously. Little girls love
to play dress up and who
doesnt love a giraffe in
spectator heels?
She repurposed a china
cabinet into a wardrobe.
She added fabricated
headboards and a vintage
chandelier.
Elisabeth Meda of
Elisabeth Meda Interior
Design of Grosse Pointe
Woods chose the master
bedrooms sitting room, ti-
tling it Welcome Home.
This was my first
choice, she said, because
of the windows and natu-
ral light. Its beautiful all
day. I used crystal and
glass accessories because
of the light that is in the
room. I played off the iron
in the windows with an
iron and glass cocktail ta-
ble and iron drapery rods.
To create a cozy space,
Meda said, she used an ar-
ea rug of soft sea grass
blue and wheat.
I chose this room to
show the possibilities for
small spaces and to create
a space for young children
to play house or engage
in indoor reading, said
Jane Shook of Jane Shook
Painted Interiors of Grosse
Pointe Farms. The room
was the upstairs linen
closet lined with white
cupboards and drawers.
It takes a great deal of
time to create custom
hand-painted furniture
and the show house time
lines require one to plan
and execute quickly, but
everyone involved with
the house is supportive in
many special ways to
make the house another
great success, she said.

"Red"
miniature dachshund
Red is a a short-haired, smoothcoat miniature
dachshund who has quite a story. She is origi-
nally from Texas, but somehow found her way
to a Michigan shelter where she was rescued by
local rescue group, FunDoxie.
Once she was in rescue they found out she
was positive for Heartworm, and had other
health issues that needed to be addressed. Now,
after months of recovery and treatment, Red is
ready for a loving forever home.
She is playful, clumsy and a very active girl, so
families with small children or smaller dogs is
not a good fit. That said, Red is house trained,
loves to go for walks, play with toys, and rest on
your lap. She is about 2 years old and 24 pounds
of playful puppy love.
For more information on Red, contact
Fundoxie by going to dachshund-rescue.org/mi-
chele or email msdachshund@gmail.com.
The list of gifts for
mom on Mothers Day
can be very long, very
elaborate and very ex-
pensive.
Jewelry, clothing, a
day at the spa each of
these are very nice ways
of showing mom just
how much she is appre-
ciated.
However, there is
something special about
a handmade gift from a
child.
On Saturday, May 10,
the St. Clair Shores
Public Library is help-
ing children create
these handcrafted gifts
by hosting their annual
Mothers Day craft
event and offering two
sessions to children of
all ages, the first run-
ning from 10 a.m.
through noon, and the
second from 2 - 4 p.m.
Its fun for the kids,
Yout h Se r v i c e s
Librarian Liz Drewek
said. Its something
they really enjoy doing
and something they
make with a lot of
thought and care. You
can see it in their faces.
This year, the library
is offering two craft op-
tions for participants,
Drewek said.
One craft is a little
more challenging than
the other, especially for
small children to do,
she said. But with a lit-
tle help from a parent or
an older sibling it
shouldnt be any prob-
lem.
Drewek said that chil-
dren werent required to
do both crafts, but the
option to complete both
is there.
Theres something
there for all ages,
Drewek said. And you
can get as detailed as
you want with the deco-
rating of each craft.
The library supplies
all the materials, and
teen volunteers are will-
ing-and-able to provide
any help the crafters
might need to make
sure that gift is just right
for mom, grandma or
anyone deserving, she
said.
Theres no registra-
tion required ahead of
time, Drewek said.
You just show up and
start.

8A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2014
One by one, they came
to the YMCA on
Jefferson Avenue be-
tween 9 Mile and Marter
last Saturday morning
and gathered in the park-
ing lot.
It was cold. It was
windy, but they still came.
Some wore gold pants
in her honor.
Others came with
memories and stories of
the times they shared
with her.
Others just came as a
tribute to her.
Whatever brought
them there, nearly 300
people took part in this
years "Breez" Through
the Shores 5K Fun run,
honoring former resi-
dent, Breeana Kay Dixit,
who was killed in 2013
while running in
Kalamazoo, Michigan.
This is really great,
Breeanas mother Julie
Horvath said. Its very
touching to see everyone
show up and honor Bree
this way. it really is.
Not only did the event
serve as a 5K race, it also
featured raffle prizes and
vendors, and raised mon-
ey for the YMCAs annual
campaign, and the Jenna
Kast Believe in Miracles
Foundation.
These are two great
charities, Horvath said.
Were really happy to be
able to help them in any
way we can.
The race wound its
way through the neigh-
borhood surrounding the
YMCA and concluded
back in the parking lot of
the facility.
We had so many vol-
unteers who helped out,
she said. There were
volunteers on every cor-
ner of the course. There
were volunteers helping
out with registering peo-
ple, everything. I really
dont know what to say. It
means a lot to me that
they are here, and help
make this possible.
Dixit was an avid run-
ner, so the 5k race seemed
the perfect tribute.
As far as the gold pants
go, longtime friend Tess
Guyette explained.
Its a Bree thing,
Guyette said. She wore
them to football games at
Western (Michigan
University). Its in honor
of here we wear them.

2A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2014
The three high school
soccer teams in St. Clair
Shores put together a
solid string of games and
are in the thick of divi-
sion races.
South Lake remained
in first place in the
Ma c o mb Ar e a
Conference Si l ver
Division, with wins over
Center Line, 6-0, Warren
Fitzgerald, 3-0, and
Madison, 8-0
The girls played very
well in each game and
the defense was out-
standing to post the shut-
outs, head coach Marty
Shearer said. The girls
are working well togeth-
er and gaining a lot of
confidence.
Against Center Line,
Jessica McClinton had a
huge game, scoring four
goals, with Lauren
Giurlanda and Taylor
Morgan scoring one goal
apiece.
In net, Chasity Homer
made 12 saves to blank
the Panthers and came
back just as strong two
days later, posting seven
saves to blank the
Spartans.
Giurlanda had the hot
hand for the Cavaliers,
scoring twice, while
Katelyn Tomasello had
the other goal.
In the game at Madison
last week, McClinton put
four more goals on the
board and is the MAC
Silver Divisions leading
scorer.
Emi l y Ral ei gh,
Stephanie Cardano,
Sydney Pelt and
Giurlanda also tallied for
South Lake, which is 4-0
in the division and 5-3
overall.
Lake Shore stayed in
first place in the MAC
Blue Division, improving
to 6-0-2 for 20 points af-
ter defeating Port Huron
Northern 4-2 and Port
Huron 8-0 on the road,
and Sterling Heights 5-0
on home turf.
Head coach Dave
Lount told his players
they needed to play with
more focus. They fol-
lowed the script to preci-
sion with the two big
road victories.
Against the Northern
Huski es, Ashl ey
Romanowski had the hat
trick, plus one assist, to
lead the Shorians.
Morgan Hudson had
the other goal, with
Shannon Marsh netting
two assists and Kaitlyn
Bartl netting one assist.
Two days later, the
Shorians took a second
straight long bus ride to
Port Huron. This time,
they had no trouble de-
stroying the Big Reds as
Bartl and Romanowski
had two goals apiece.
Other offensive stand-
outs were Katie Ruman,
Jacee Shelton and
Hudson.
Next up for Lake Shore
is a showdown with rival
Lakeview High School
on Monday, May 12 at
Lakeview, while the
Cavaliers will square off
against fellow MAC
Silver rival, and the team
on their heels in the divi-
sion race, New Haven
High School at home on
Monday, May 12.
