ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Dear Reader,

May is history month in South Australia and we have several
local events scheduled, which you will Iind promoted on the
cover and inside this issue.
This has been a quiet month Irom an ABRA perspective with
nothing to report.

With the looming closure oI the McLaren Vale pool to make
way Ior redevelopment, there is a petition circulating to get
another established in the area oI Aldinga Beach. Although
we have ready access to one oI the best beaches there are an
indoor pool is a necessity Ior water aerobics, hydro therapy
etc. Travelling to Noarlunga on a regular basis Ior these
activities is prohibitive to many users.

We are down to 44 pages again this issue, due to loss oI
some advertisers, but hope you can Iind items oI interest.

I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - President & Editor

Its great to see the Council have put
a new bush shelter on the busy Row-
ley Road bus stop adjacent the shop-
ping centre.
What a pity the morons, with no
respect Ior property or
community spirit, had to spoil it
almost immediately with their
mindless graIIiti tags.
A nursery school pupil told his teacher he'd Iound a cat, but it was
dead.
'How do you know that the cat was dead?' she asked her pupil.
'Because I pissed in its ear and it didn't move,' answered the child
innocently.
'You did WHAT?' the teacher exclaimed in surprise.
'You know,' explained the boy, 'I leaned over and went 'Pssst' and it
didn't move'

A small boy is sent to bed by his Iather.
Five minutes later.....'Da-ad....'
'What?'
'I'm thirsty. Can you bring a drink oI water?'
'No, You had your chance. Lights out.'
Five minutes later: 'Da-aaaad.....'
'WHAT?'
'I'm THIRSTY. Can I have a drink oI water??'
'I told you NO! II you ask again, I'll have to smack you!!'
Five minutes later......'Daaaa-aaaad.....'
'WHAT!'
'When you come in to smack me, can you bring a drink oI water?'

Out oI occult and into the light

Micks earliest memories of his childhood in New
Zealand were oI Iear, terror and nightmares. His mother
was an avid occult Iollower.

Growing up he gravitated to street gangs iI Iear was
going to be his companion he might as well share it and
when they moved to Adelaide he joined ranks with the
skin heads and punk rockers.

Constant partying, heavy drugs and almost non-stop
drinking, mixed with seances and Ouija boards, resulted
in physical demonic attacks, a crushing Iear, sense oI
loneliness, helplessness and acute depression.

He remembered the kindness oI a local pastor, Don
Drayson, Irom Christies Beach Baptists, who once said,
Mick [very inebriated], where have you been, weve
missed you and we love you. This broke him the
opposite oI what he Ielt he deserved and he wept.

With the help oI the love oI his liIe, Julie (a white witch
at the time), a series oI deliverance sessions at the church
and a genuine experience oI Christ, Mick gradually broke
through. He changed his ways, lost his addictions and
now attends Southern LiIe Church in 280 Beach Rd.,
Hackham (Psr. Don); where he gets to preach and
demonstrate - Gods observable power to release others.

A little boy got on the bus, sat next to a man reading
a book, and noticed he had his collar on
backwards ..
The little boy asked why he wore his collar
backwards .
The man, who was a priest, said, " am a Father . ."
The little boy replied, "My Daddy doesn't wear his
collar like that."
The priest looked up from his book and answered, "
am the Father of many".
The boy said, "My Dad has 4 boys, 4 girls and two
grandchildren and he doesn't wear his collar that
way!"
The priest, getting impatient, said . " am the Father
of hundreds", and went back to reading his book.
The little boy sat quietly thinking for a while, then
leaned over and said, "Maybe you should wear a
condom, and put your pants on backwards instead
of your collar."

Manure...An interesting fact.

Manure. In the 16th and 17th centuries, evervthing had to be
transported bv ship and it was also before the invention of
commercial fertili:ers, so large shipments of manure were quite
common.
It was shipped dry, because in dry Iorm it weighed a lot less
than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it
become heavier, but the process oI Iermentation began again, oI
which a by product is methane gas oI course.. As the stuII was
stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did)
happen.
Methane began to build up below decks and the Iirst time
someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOM! Several
ships were destroyed in this manner beIore it was determined
just what was happening
AIter that, the bundles oI manure were always stamped with the
instruction ' Stow high in transit ' on them, which meant Ior the
sailors to stow it high enough oII the lower decks so that any
water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile
cargo and start the production oI methane.
Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ' , (Stow High In Transit)
which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this
very day.
You probably did not know the true history oI this word.
Neither did I.
I had always thought it was a golI term!!!!

Learn how to protect
your local environment

South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise Ieaturing
more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and
460 bird species.
Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per
cent oI our native bushland has been lost in some areas and
with it, many plant, animal and bird species.
Trees For Lifes Bush For Life Program gives people from all
walks oI liIe the opportunity to help preserve what little we
have left by learning how to restore and protect our States
native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops.
At the workshop, participants will learn:
why the bush needs your help;
the best strategies Ior restoring ecological processes;
minimal disturbance techniques;
how to work saIely in the bush;
how you can get involved as a Bush For LiIe volunteer
Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through
the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques
to get native plants regenerating and how to deIeat invasive
weeds. Bush For LiIe also holds advanced workshops which
cover topics such as native plant and grass identiIication,
advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and
more.
Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the
longer term. They can participate in small group activities
every now and then, adopt a bushland site oI their own or join
our Bush Action Team.
II you want to Iind out more about getting hands-on experience
through Bush For LiIe, phone the oIIice on 8406 0500.

Vitamin D, Vitamin Sunshine
Why Is Something So Simple, So Hard to Get?
When we think oI Australia, we think oI surI, sun and sand,
beautiIul climates and the great outdoors. With vitamin D
readily available Irom the sun, why are so many people
deIicient? An estimated 73 oI adults suIIer Irom inadequate
vitamin D levels.
Are we spending too much more time indoors?
Are we obsessed with the need to use sunscreen?
With so many Iactors inIluencing vitamin D, can you do be
sure you have adequate vitamin D levels?
Delving Into Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a Iat soluble vitamin derived Irom UVB waves
Irom the sun. Dietary sources are limited and include oily
Iish and egg yolks. Vitamin D is well known Ior its role in
maintaining the health oI bones and improving calcium ab-
sorption; but D is so much more than this! It also helps im-
prove immunity. Vitamin D also improves muscle strength
and can reduce Iractures in the elderly. Did you realise that
low levels oI vitamin D have also been associated with an
increased risk oI certain cancers and other chronic diseases,
including cardiovascular disease and diabetes?
D Deficiency Is Widespread
It may be quite alarming to Iind out that so many oI your
Iamily, Iriends and others in your community may be suIIer-
ing Irom a vitamin D deIiciency. With our main source oI
vitamin D coming Irom sunlight, keep an eye out Ior those
you know who may be at greater risk oI deIiciency. They
include people who are older, housebound, darker skinned
individuals, and those who wear covered clothes, work in-
door s or r egul ar l y a voi d s un expos ur e.
During the colder months, you may need to spend more time
outdoors to obtain vitamin D; compared to summertime,
when several minutes oI sun exposure daily may be suIIi-
cient.
Recommendations for Achieving Optimal D Levels
In order to achieve and maintain optimal vitamin D levels,
here are a Iew simple steps:
II getting sun exposure, aim Ior 6 to 7 minutes mid-
morning or mid-aIternoon during warmer months, and
7 to 40 minutes at noon during winter; arms and shoul-
ders should be visible, and without sunscreen.
II you know you are low in vitamin D and you wish to
avoid the sun, it may be more appropriate to correct a
deIiciency with a supplement to quickly and saIely
build up your vitamin D stores.
Put D Back in Your Day
Vitamin D is critical Ior the health oI your entire body. With
so many people deIicient in this vitamin, it is important to get
your levels assessed to ensure they are not low. Vitamin D
deIiciencies can have negative eIIects on your health and
may increase your risk oI chronic disease.

GLOBAL WARMING IS NOT NEW.

The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are Iinding the water too hot, according
to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday Irom ConsulaIIt, at Bergen, Norway.
Reports Irom Iishermen, seal hunters, and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-oI
temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as Iar north as 81 degrees 29
minutes.
Soundings to a depth oI 3,100 meters showed the gulI stream still very warm. Great masses oI ice have been replaced by moraines oI
earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.
Very Iew seals and no white Iish are Iound in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals oI herring and smelts which have never beIore
ventured so Iar north, are being encountered in the old seal Iishing grounds. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice
melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.
I apologize, I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922, as reported by the AP and published in The
Washington Post - 90+ years ago

Senior Health Month
For many people, the years creep by and our pets have aged
beIore we realise it. This ageing process is important to be
aware oI, because many diseases occur or become more
common in older pets. Pets older than 7 years are generally
classed as seniors, and extra care must be paid to detect
potentially liIe-threatening diseases early. For every one
human year dogs age 7 years, and cats 5 years meaning
that a 7-year-old dog is equivalent to a 50-year-old person
the age most oI us begin to have more Irequent health
checks!

Why is senior health important?
Many diseases in older dogs and cats will progress rapidly
because oI the Iaster ageing process. This means that a 12-
monthly health check may not be Irequent enough Ior the
early identiIication oI disease conditions.
Many diseases can be present without initially causing
overt illness to the animal recognition oI these conditions
beIore they do cause more serious health concerns is vital.
The best way to accomplish this is regular health
examinations; and Ior the older pet we recommend this
happen every 6 months.
Common diseases we see in the older pet are: arthritis;
dementia; dental, heart, kidney and liver disease; among
many others.

What do regular health checks involve?
Senior dogs and cats are advised to have a thorough
physical examination every 6 months. A urine exam is also
recommended at each 6 month check, as this can help
detect some diseases.
Every 12 months blood testing is recommended to assess
internal organ Iunction (eg kidneys, liver, endocrine
diseases) Ior early diagnosis, discussion, and treatment oI
any conditions present. This will lead to improved
prognosis Ior the long-term outcome, and a better quality oI
liIe Ior your ageing pets.

How do we get started?
When booking your pet in Ior a senior health check, a
standard consult will usually apply. II your pet has multiple
issues that must be addressed, a long consultation may be
recommended to give adequate time to address these.

t is interesting to note that the Noah being saved by
God from the flood story, that appears in the Judeo /
Christian / Muslim scripts, is reflective of previous
similar accounts found in
Babylonian / Assyrian
accounts that pre date
them.

This in turn reflects a
similar account in ancient
Hindu scriptures which
predates the Babylonian
account.
