RECTIFIER CIRCUITS

Equipment Required:

4 Silicon Diodes
1 10K Resistor
1 .1ufd Capacitor
1 1ufd Capacitor
1 10ufd Capacitor
1 Center-Tapped Transformer and Power Cord
1 Digital Multimeter
1 Oscilloscope
Graph Paper

Procedure:

1. Test all four diodes with an ohmmeter.

2. Construct the circuit shown in Figure 1 using a silicon diode. The load is the
10K resistor.

Figure 1

3. Measure the DC voltage across the load with a digital multimeter. Record this in
Table 1 as V
L(MEAS)
. (note: for this measurement, do not use the Agilent
multimeters, use the Fluke multimeters in the cabinets)

4. Connect the oscilloscope across the load. The coupling switch should be set to
DC. Set the controls so that between one and two cycles are displayed. Draw
the waveform on a sheet of graph paper. Record the peak voltage across the
load, as V
L(PEAK)
, in Table 1. (You may need a 10X probe.)

5. Connect a .1ufd capacitor across the load and draw the waveform on a sheet of
graph paper.

6. Replace the .1ufd capacitor with a 1ufd capacitor and draw the waveform.

7. Replace the 1ufd capacitor with a 10ufd capacitor and draw the waveform.

8. Construct the circuit shown in Figure 2.

9. Repeat steps 3 through 7.

10. Construct the circuit shown in Figure 3.

11. Repeat steps 3 through 7.

12. Compute the DC voltage across the load for each circuit. (Without any bypass
capacitor.) Record these in Table 1.

Multisim: Do all three circuits in Multisim, plotting the output voltage without a filter
capacitor for each. Under basic components (the ones colored in blue) use a virtual
transformer. Double click the symbol and set the turns ratio to 9.483. Use a virtual AC
voltage source and set the input voltage to 169 volts peak and the frequency to 60Hz.
Construct each circuit. Place the ground for the circuit on the negative end of the load
resistor. Go to simulate, Analysis, Transient Analysis, and set End time (TSTOP) to
.034. Go to output variables and select the node for the positive side of the load
resistor.
