Rice
About three quarters of the people in India are farmers. One of the main food crops
in India is rice. There are several things a farmer must do if he wants to grow rice. First,
the farmer plants the seeds in the ground. When the seedlings are big enough, they are
moved. People pick the little seedling by hand and plant them in a padi field. These padi fields
have been flooded with water to stop insects from attacking the young plants.
When the plants are about one meter tall, the farmers must watch the fields very
carefully. Sometimes birds will come and eat the new rice fromm the plants. Some farmers
put scarecrows in the firlds to frightens the birds away. When the rice is ready, the farmer
must collect it from the plants. Then the rice must be separated from the stalks on which it
has grown. Machines in factories take off the outside of each grain of rice.
There are many different kinds of rice grown in India. One of the ost expensive rice is
Basmati rice. Basmati rice smells delicious and the name in the Basmati which means the
perfume one.
