What is BIM? Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an innovative and collaborative way of working that is underpinned by digital technologies which support more efficient methods of designing, creating and maintaining the built environment. In essence BIM embeds key product and asset data within multi-dimensional computer models that can be used for effective management of information throughout the project lifecycle from earliest inception through occupation. It has been described as a game-changing technological and cultural process for the construction sector. From Growth through BIM April 3012 report of the UK Construction Industry Council (CIC) BIM will be central to the resurgence of the building industry in Ireland. For the coming years it is predicted that building activity in the domestic economy will be centred on the vast challenge of retrofitting the existing private, public and domestic building stock to meet mandatory EU energy performance requirements, while opportunities are also emerging for Irish building design and construction businesses to provide design and construction services in an international setting. All of this activity will require significant up-skilling amongst architects, engineers, surveyors, technologists and construction managers in the use of BIM. The School of Architecture and School of Multidisciplinary Technologies at the DIT College of Engineering + Built Environment have developed a suite of BIM programmes and modules to meet this need. Application forms can be downloaded from http://www.dit.ie/architecture/ Building Information Modelling (BIM) DIT / College / School The College of Engineering & the Built Environment is one of four colleges in the Dublin Institute of Technology. The College comprises seven schools, each of which provides professionally accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in building design and construction disciplines including architecture, architectural technology, civil and structural engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, planning, quantity surveying and construction management. The new School of Multidisciplinary Technologies has developed two industry-focussed re-skilling programmes in Building Information Modelling (BIM), which are delivered in collaboration with the Dublin School of Architecture, the School of Surveying & Construction Management and the School of Mechanical & Design Engineering, These programmes are: DT775 CPD Diploma (BIM Technologies) DT775a CPD Diploma (Collaborative BIM) The Dublin School of Architecture also delivers three short CPD Certificate modules focussed on developing the BIM skills for architects and architectural technologists. These modules are: CPDBEU01 BIM Architecture 1: Primary Building Elements CPDBEU02 BIM Architecture 2: Secondary Building Elements CPDBEU04 BIM Architecture 3: Tertiary Building Elements Full details on our BIM and other part time postgraduate and CPD programmes are available on the homepage of the DIT Dublin School of Architecture http://www.dit.ie/architecture/ 1 www.dit.ie/architecture www.dit.ie/architecture Building Information Modelling (BIM) 3 2 What our CPD BIM students say: This is what some of our CPD BIM students have said about the CPD BIM programmes: My first few hours working on Revit blew my mind away. I was thrilled to be able to produce basic 3D models in such a quick way. Initially I thought that we were merely drawing in 3D, but I now see Revit as a very powerful database which presents data graphically, enabling us humans to interpret it. This demands careful control of the data input, adding information at any given stage of the project in a logical and organised manner, building up in layers of increasing complexity as the project progresses. I look forward to building on the skills I now have, and cant wait to do my first real BIM project! Architect The main reason that I was keen to upskill in Revit was to optimise employment security and ensure that I was not overtaken by some young whippersnapper fresh out of college. Architectural Technologist I found the lectures were delivered in a very friendly and informative manner. The back-up from the lecturer and assistant was second to none and went a long way to my enjoyment of the course. Engineering Technician Having completed the BIM Architecture 1 module, I realise that for Irish consultancies and multi-disciplinary design teams working in growing but competitive international markets, BIM is a must. The capacity to use BIM could be a consultancy's unique selling point, but can also provide the efficiencies required to alter the profit range. Structural engineer I recently attended an interview for a new project with a retail client. My co-directors were making the job pitch and towards the end of the interview I took out my laptop and gave them a brief introduction to BIM through the use of my DIT project model. They are informed clients and experienced in examining conventional sketches, Autocad drawings, sketch-up models etc. They were so impressed with the capabilities of Revit, and of our ability to use it, that it swung the contract in our favour. Architectural Technologist Over the last few years many new software applications have promised so much. They all looked really slick when they were demonstrated, but alas when you tried to use them in the real world they did not come up to scratch. My experience with Revit has been completely different. I started with a little apprehension, but to my surprise it went way beyond my expectations due to its ease of use and the results you can get with very little input. After only an eight week course I had enough ability and confidence to produce a model with basic construction documentation. Going forward I feel I will be able to build on this foundation of knowledge and produce building industry standard construction documents. Now I am looking to the future with great interest to see where this new journey will take me. Construction Technician It is quite extraordinary how much we all learnt within three and a half months. Although many felt under pressure at various stages it was all worth it. It is an inspirational course and a unique concept in BIM education. I think you have all surpassed your goal. Architect Entry requirements: The various College of Engineering + Built Environment CPD BIM programmes and modules are open to the following categories of applicants: Graduates of Level 8 degree programmes in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Construction Management Graduates of professionally accredited Level 7 programmes in Architectural Technology and Construction Technology All students are required to have sound basic computer skills, and experience of construction processes. Programme attendance: To complete a CPD Diploma programme, students should allocate 20 hours of their time each week for the duration of each semester. 6 hours will be spent in college, and the remaining 14 hours will be spent in self- directed learning carrying out project work. To complete a standalone CPD Certificate module, students should allocate 7 hours of their time each week for the duration of each semester. Students attend college for 3 hours each week over a period of 8 weeks, and the remaining hours are spent in self-directed learning carrying out project work.
