1. Text and Rationale.

The group this material was chosen for is an Elementary class of 8-10 learners, ages ranging from
16 to 40 years old. The text is a we page ta!en from http"##disneycruise.disney.go.com. In order
to make the text more suitable for an elementary level class, it has been graded without
affecting content in a major form. For examle, the hrase !it"s also a bargain shoer"s
aradise# for !It"s also a shoing aradise#, some other hrases were added to hel
learners coe with reading for gist activities. $n our e%eryday life internet and we resources
are a%ailale for almost all of our learners as they ha%e mentioned to ha%e gone online and een in
contact with the $nternet. Tra%elling has een always a good topic for young adult and adult
learners, and reading aout exotic and fun places in another language results oth interesting and
challenging. & lot of information aout international destinations is only a%ailale in English'
therefore, this text is a good way to pro%ide the opportunity to explore %ocaulary and
understanding of tra%el we pages in English. The text reflects the desire of learners to read aout
tra%elling around the world and the purpose of this text will e to find specific information within the
we page. (armer )The *ractice of English +anguage Teaching, ,000"188- states that teaching
recepti%e s!ills tas!s must e sufficiently realistic and moti%ating for the students to percei%e a
useful purpose for text study. $ elie%e this wepage fulfils (armer.s statement.
$. Recetive %kills and Tasks.

/eading for gist
Tas! aims
To de%elop student.s skimming s!ills and to pro%ide students with the opportunity to thin! aout
the possile language in%ol%ed in a tra%el we page.
Task (echanics
& copy of the we page will e gi%en to students and the class predicts the type of language and
information they will find in the text. Teacher will as! students what they fa%ourite touristic
destinations are or to which they ha%e een or want to tra%el to. %tudents are given three tasks
to develo their reading for gist skills, 1. They have to look at the web age and tell what
tye of travel arrangements the comany is offering, $ %s have to match seven ictures
with the destinations on shown on the web age )three missing ictures * + to match as
additional image for + different destinations,, -. To look at the web age and take few
thoughts of things they might find interesting to read more about. &s an additional tas!
students will e as!ed to pay attention to the we page format as it is a real one it would e useful
for them to !now how this type of we pages are designed for further use of them. 0inally, teacher
will elicit and introduce some functional language sentences for students to use in the post reading
acti%ities. Teacher will lea%e those sentences on the oard for the rest of the lesson.
$n this part of the lesson interaction patters go from indi%idual to pair wor! when sharing
information aout what students ha%e answered in the three mentioned 1uestions and we page
design.
Rationale
+earners will get a general idea of the text.s topic, intention, and design with these tas!s. This will
pro%ide learners with a sense of ha%ing a purpose for reading and going through the we page
without trying to understand e%ery word ut the general idea. 2cri%ener )+earning Teaching,
1334"145- states that we should let students !now that it is not always essential to understand
e%ery word, as we are still achie%ing a specific and useful goal.
/eading for details.
&ims
To pro%ide the opportunity to de%elop their reading to extract specific information )scanning- s!ills
and the opportunity to ha%e a etter loo! at the %ocaulary used in tra%elling around the world.
6echanics
2tudents will ha%e to loo! at the page and answer a series of 1uestions aout the contents of the
page. 0irst they will do it in pairs and then they will ha%e to compare their answers and findings with
a partner. This will pro%ide learners with the opportunity to get real information from authentic
material and ma!e use of what is in the text to do something.
Rationale
.s we are dealing with an elementary class we cannot exect them to read and
understand every word, but if we encourage them to find secific information in an
authentic material, they will have a reason to aroach material in /nglish without being
worried and reluctant to face the language. !They do not have to worry about arts of the
text they have difficulty with but only those that they need to extract the re0uired
information. .s the text has been slightly modified it is exected from learners to be able
to answer most of the 0uestions with enough difficulty in order to rovide a sense of
achievement in dealing with an authentic text.
1art - 1roductive %kills
+earners will ha%e the opportunity to practice their %ocaulary for tra%elling and to tal! aout their
fa%ourite destinations or aout destinations they would li!e to tra%el to. This will pro%ide an
opportunity to de%elop their spea!ing and still e using the we page precisely for what it was
written, and will comment on a whole range of appropriate ideas and information.
(echanics
Teacher will refer to the 0uestions and hrases elicited at the beginning of the class and
will rovide learners with a set of ideas to hel students organi2e their ideas to talk about
travelling and rovide aid with vocabulary. 3earners might want to use or not the
0uestions and ideas rovided by the teacher4 however, it is a good aid for heling
students develo ideas to talk about during this task.
Rationale
$n this stage we pro%ide learners with the opportunity to share ideas and to increase the amount of
student tal!ing time and use common language used when tal!ing aout tra%elling to communicate
with each other. 7y lea%ing students with the opportunity to use language in a freer spea!ing tas!
they will feel more comfortale tal!ing to their peers without ha%ing the teacher 8on their ac!s9 and
will lead to a more natural way of using English, peer correction and confidence in using the
language in a personali:ed way as they are sharing their personal thoughts aout tra%elling. (armer
)The *ractice of +anguage Teaching, pp ,44-,46- states 8learners will e teaching and learning in
the group exhiiting a degree of self-reliance that simply is not possile when the teacher is acting
as a controller9.
