COURSE DESCRI PTION

This developmental course is designed as a foundation for those with limited or no computer experience.
Students are introduced to skill sets such as computer terminology, hardware vs. software, email,
operating systems and software applications such as word processing. Students are prepared to achieve a
competency level necessary to comprehend and use computer systems with a focus on practical
application.

STUDENT LEARNI NG OUTCOMES

GIVEN A PERSONAL COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS, THE STUDENT WILL BE
ABLE TO:
1. Define the tangible components of a desktop
2. Comprehend basic computer terminology
3. Identify the use of system vs. application software
4. Use fixed and removable drives to store and retrieve data
5. Backup data between fixed and removable drives
6. Describe and use the Windows Operating System
7. Use Blackboard and the On-Line Student Center (eGRCC) as a resource
8. Create and modify word processing documents.
9. Create, modify and maintain spreadsheets
10. Create and modify PowerPoint documents

EVALUATI ON

Students will be graded on the basis of total points earned for the assigned projects, chapter quizzes, and
attendance. Your Textbook Projects are step-by-step tutorial activities from each chapter for which you

can receive a maximum of 10 points per project. Handouts are also used for completing assignments (10
points max, per assignment). Two (2) points, per class period, will be deducted for late assignments.
And following each section (ex. Computer Concepts, Windows, etc.) you will complete an on-line quiz.
Each quiz contains true/false, multiple choice and hot spot questions, is timed for 60 minutes and can only
be taken in class on the scheduled date. Or in case of an absence, you can make up one (1) quiz on the
last day of class (no retakes).

ATTENDANCE
Attendance is a significant part of the class, and will be factored into your final grade. Missing sessions
in a hands-on class is discouraged, and if you do miss a class it is your responsibility to check the
assignment sheet in Blackboard and submit the project before the next class period. Tutors are available
in the Open Computer Lab (307 Cook) refer to the flyer in Blackboard for the days and times for the
CO-003 Study Group sessions. Once again, all assignments must be submitted by the due date in order
for you to take the quiz.

WI THDRAWAL

Please inform me as soon as possible if you need to withdraw from the class. This can be done onlineor
through the Student Records Office. Students who do not continue to attend class and do not officially
withdraw from class will receive a failing grade. It is not possible to withdraw after completing 70% of
the class.

AUDI T

If you wish to audit the course (take it for no credit), please notify me of your intent within one week
from the start of class. Audit status does not count toward full-time enrollment but will appear on
your transcript. When auditing a class, full tuition is required and you are expected to complete
classwork (except for tests, final projects and/or term papers).

COMPUTER LAB

The Computer Lab (Room 307 Cook, Phone 234-3674) is available for your use during the hours noted
below. BE SURE TO SIGN IN at the front desk. A picture ID is required.

Monday-Thursday 7:30 am - 8:00 pm
Friday 7:30 am - 5:00 pm
Saturday (220 ATC) 7:30 am 5:00 pm
Sunday (In the Library) 1:00 pm 5:00 pm

No food or drink is allowed in the classroom. And, there is a campus-wide policy that restricts cell phone
use (calls, texting, Internet, etc.) while class is in session. Personal computers, head phones, and other
electronic devices are also restricted. In addition, the computers are to be used for classroom work only
(no games, email, social networking, etc.) while class is in session. The classroom should be conducive
to the learning experience, so you will be expelled for disruptive behavior (see the Student Code of
Conduct) and immediately reported to the Director of Student Conduct.

CAMPUS POLI CE

The College maintains a staff of safety officers (234-4010). The Campus Police Department office is
located at 25 Lyon, N.E. (across from the Ford Fieldhouse). If you need to be reached while in class,
Campus Police are authorized to locate students.

TUTORS

A staff of both professional and student tutors are available to you at no additional charge. They are
located in the Computer Lab (307 Cook) or call for an appointment at 234-3671.

CHANGES TO THE SYLLABUS

The instructor reserves the right to change the contents of this syllabus due to unforeseen circumstances.
Students will be given notice of relevant changes during class or through a Blackboard Announcement.
