This project includes a structural observation of all buildings owned or leased by the University
(MU) statewide to identify structural life / safety issues of immediate concern. The specific building
list was developed by MU and provided to the Consultant team.
THHinc acted as the program manager for a team of structural engineering professionals to
complete the project. Team members included Structural Engineering Associates (SEA), Alper Audi
(AA) in addition to THHinc (THH) staff.
The purpose of this project was to complete a limited onsite visual observation and prepare
Engineering Structural Observation Reports for all buildings owned and leased by MU. This
includes all structures with the exception of those located within the UMKC, MS&T or UMSL
campuses. This report includes buildings located on the Columbia Campus with the exception of
University Village Apartments which were inspected and all walkways braced prior to this report
being prepared.
Considering the number of buildings and desired schedule for this project the observations were
cursory in nature and were limited to those items that may cause, or contribute to, a structural life
safety concern in the immediate future.
Structural observations were limited to what can be seen visually without demolition. It is
understood that hidden conditions may existing that could cause structural problems in the future
and that these items may not be identified during this limited observation.
Each unique structure was documented with a sealed Structural Building Observation Report which
will briefly describe the construction type, geometry, and general observed conditions .The
deliverables include:
1. Executive Summary.
2. Spreadsheet identifying:
a. All buildings observed by name and building number
b. Firm performing the inspection
c. Checkbox identifying if immediate concerns were observed
3. Individual evaluations of each building reviewed.
a. If immediate needs were found MU was notified, remedial action taken and the area
reinspected.
4. Photos obtained for each building will be included in electronic format as well.
No engineering calculations, material sampling and testing, or demolition was included in the
scope of this project.
In all, 376 buildings on the Columbia Campus were observed, reports prepared and included in this
report. Out of 376, eighteen were identified as having immediate concerns. Of those eighteen, ten

Access to the deteriorated stair was blocked and the structure was entirely removed. A new
temporary stair structure was placed to restore access. Figure 3 below shows the new
temporary stair. It was inspected and found to be structurally sound on March 10, 2014.

temporary stair structure was placed to restore access. Figure 3 below shows the new
temporary stair. It was inspected and found to be structurally sound on March 10, 2014.
