Great Moments Are Born From Great Opportunites.
--Herb Brooks
Thats what the Indiana Ice have here this season.
With last season fading into the sunset, Indy looks to open a new door in their Circle City history of
hockey as a healthy mix of key veterans and new recruits look to make a big impact in the Ices tenth
anniversary season.
It was no secret that Indys season ended earlier than it ever had before last year. For the frst tme in
their existence, a shot at the Clark Cup Championship ended afer only 64 games.
We found out last season how hard it is to win in this league, Pham said. This year, we are defnitely
going to get more wins and get to the playofs.
What wasnt obvious to the outside world was the rebuilding phase that began in the middle of the
2012-2013 campaign.
Mid-season trades turned into a gold mine for the Ice come draf day when fve frst-round selectons
helped construct what would become Indys new ofensive unit. The Ice used the frst overall pick to
select Victory Honda product Aidan Muir.
A lot of very skilled players have been picked frst overall so I was very excited, Muir said. I was
actually working on home work when I found out and got a lot of calls, so I didnt get much done.
Not every ingredient in this recipe called for change. The game is stll played on ice, players stll shoot
the puck on net and scoring more goals than your opponent is stll strongly recommended to maintain
a winning program.
An additonal element in this mixture includes the familiar face of head coach and general manager
Jef Brown.
Fresh of his coaching stnt with the Robertson Cup Champion St. Louis Bandits (NAHL), Brown took
what was a struggling team and turned it into exactly what it was--an opportunity.
Backed with 13 years of NHL experience, Brown looks to lead this years roster to one endA Clark
Cup Championship.
We all need to start paying more atenton to the game and focusing on some of the smaller details,
but were pleased with what weve seen so far, Brown said. This season, we expect to win it all.
Everybody has to expect that.
Not only is Brown not alone in his quest to bring the Clark Cup back to Indy, but hes got a pair of Indy
bench veterans by his side.
Adam Krug makes his sophomore appearance as the Ices associate head coach afer being a mainstay
in Indys recruitng eforts for the upcoming season.
He draws his experience from a four-year internatonal career afer a record-setng career with the
Adrian College hockey program. In two seasons at Adrian, he accumulated 129 points in 57 games and
fnished in the programs all-tme top ten in goals (52), assists (77), power play goals (20) and short-
handed goals (6).

New to the bench, but not to the Circle City hockey faithful is assistant coach Bernie John.
During his fve seasons in Indy, John was an all-star blueliner who led all team defensemen in scoring
during his career with the CHL Ice. He also earned a Miron Cup Championship to his name while
playing for Indy.
Its been a great mix so far. Everybody brings something diferent to the table, Brown said. Its been
a lot of fun working with both of them and a very positve experience.
This unique mixture of veteran and rookie experience is closely refected on the ice as the team returns
only seven players from last years squad, retaining some top playmakers for the upcoming season.
The forward presence is captained by third-year player Tyler Pham while Jason Salvaggio, Patrick
Newell, Mitch Hults and Alex Talcot return for their second campaign in Indy.
On the defensive side of the puck, another third-year guy in Vince Pedrie joins young guns Joshua
Jacobs and Jake Cass to mind the blue line.
There are a lot of new guys in the locker room, but I defnitely feel like we have a really good squad
this season, Pham said. Now its a mater of becoming one and being a team of brothers. If that
happens, we are going to go far this year.
Indy was also able to capitalize on some trades during the ofseason to gain some additonal USHL
experience, adding forward Michael Booth from Fargo and Carmel, IN-natve Michael Preston from
Muskegon.
It will be great that my parents only have to drive 30 minutes to get to my games, rather than a few
hours, commented Preston, the former Indianapolis Racers defenseman. Its nice being able to play
at home for once.
Plucked from a bank of early picks in the USHL draf, Indys newly acquired talent looks to make an
impact this season as Muir, Brian Pinho, Scot Conway and Jason Pawloski get their frst taste of Tier I
junior hockey experience.
Muir and Pinho even heard their names called twice over the summer as the pair was selected in the
2013 NHL Draf in Newark, New Jersey.
Afer his frst overall selecton in the USHL Entry Draf in April, Muir was the frst of the pair to be
picked in the NHL draf by the Edmonton Oilers (4th round) while Pinho went to the Washington
Capitals (6th round).
It was unreal being drafed right out of midget (youth) hockey, Muir mentoned. It was surprising,
but its something Ive worked towards for a long tme.
While shades of last seasons early exit stll linger in the minds of some players and fans, eforts are
being made to ensure that the Indiana Ice will always remain a force in the USHL this season and
beyond. Though some faces are the same, experience combined with some of the top young talent
from across the naton look to make the Indiana Ice a strong compettor in their tenth anniversary
season and beyond.
Letng the fans down was the worst part of last season, veteran forward Alex Talcot said. We
started the season poorly and it became a rebuilding year, but thats hard to spin to fans. Hopefully
well be able to win more games and make them happy.
