Communication Strategies

An effective instruction can be achieved by embedding methods, strategies and techniques that will suit
to the specified objectives. For example, if the topic is about adjectives the teacher can make use of
picture puzzle showing description, and then he/she will allow the students to form the puzzle pieces
and describe the picture itself by calling names of the students who will answer. From then on the topic
can be elaborated further. Likewise, in attaining the second language communication strategies can be
of great help. Since the target is to develop the second language among the learners, it is just right to
employ communication strategies that will help to attain the above mentioned target. As the clich goes
practice makes perfect. So, I can say, that by merely providing the students various learning activities
aligned with the strategies I employ, they will be practiced to learn and use the second language.
However, I am not ensuring that through practice, learners will be fully equipped with the language. But
gradually, the learners will be competent enough in communicating using the second language.
Therefore as an educator teaching English as the subject, I can provide strategies in teaching like essay
writing, oral exam, reading stories, storytelling poem writing. Hence, these communication strategies
will serve as the stimuli for them to learn the second language. Of course in every teaching- learning
process, educators must provide stimulus to ensure that we can get response from the students. In fact
that is the reason why we are obliged to include motivation before the formal instruction. The
motivation part will stimulate the response of students same with using the communication strategies in
developing the acquisition of the second language.
Motherese to first language
Language is considered as the foundation of communication. But, how can you communicate without
being equipped in the usage of the first language? According to Piaget, learning is not acquired
overnight. Thus, he emphasized that learning should be gradual; from simple to complex. Same in the
context of acquiring the first language; it should be learned process by process. Basically language is
learned first through the sounds that any child would hear. From then on, a child can now actually utter
the word/ words based from how he/she heard it. That begins the use of motherese language. The
motherese language affects the attainment of the first language because it will serve as its foundation. I
believe that in all things foundations are really needed to build something. Heres a common example, a
typical house would not be a concrete one without its foundations; the blueprint and the raw materials
are necessary to build it. Back to the acquisition of the first language, before a Filipino child can utter the
word laruan he/she would utter it first as yayuan. However as his/her maturity develops and
through frequent communication the child can now utter the rightful word/ words. On the other hand,
maturity per se does not guarantee that a child can be a competent speaker of the first language. In
reality, there are children whose age matures but had hard time in using the first language. This means
that first language was not fully developed.
As the saying goes there are two sides of a coin. Though I believe that motherese language can be the
foundation of the acquisition of the first language, I also perceived that
