3 A group of 9 people consists of 4 men and 5 women.
(i) Find the number of ways which the 9 people can be divided into 2 groups consisting of
5 and 4 people each. [1]
(ii) How many ways can we arrange the men and women in a row if men and women were
to occupy alternate positions? [2]

4 In a competition, two teams, A and B, play each other for the best of three games. The first
team to win two games is the winner.
In the first game, both teams have equal chance of winning. In subsequent games, the
probability of winning a game depends on the result of the previous game. If team A wins the
previous game, the probability that team A wins the next game isp . If team A loses the
previous game, the probability that team A wins the next game is

If team A has equal chance of winning and losing the competition, find the value of p .
[2]
The competition is held once a year and it runs for three years. Find the probability that team
A wins in all three years given that team A wins at least once. [3]

5 (a) On average, 1 in 20 thirty-five-year-old men suffer from hyperopia. Find
(i) the probability that in a group of 10 randomly chosen thirty-five-year-old men,
less than two suffer from hyperopia. [2]
(ii) using a Poisson approximation, the probability that out of 60 randomly chosen
thirty-five-year-old men, at least 56 do not suffer from hyperopia. [3]
(b) It is known that the number of cataract surgeries a particular ophthalmologist performs
is a Poisson variable with average 1 per month. Using a suitable approximation, find
the probability that the number of cataract surgeries the ophthalmologist performs in
one year exceeds 13. [4]

6 The weights of domestic cats and dogs in a country have independent normal distributions
with their means and standard deviations given in the following table.

Mean (kg) Standard Deviation (kg)
Cats 6 1.4
Dogs 17 5

(i) Find the probability that the total weight of one randomly chosen cat and one randomly
chosen dog exceeds 25 kg. [3]
(ii) Find the probability that the difference in weight of two randomly chosen cats is less
than 1.2 kg. [3]
(iii) At least 10% of the dogs are heavier than w kg. Find the greatest value of w to the
nearest 0.1 kg. [3]
(iv) Find the probability that twice the weight of a randomly chosen dog exceeds the sum of
weights of six randomly chosen cats. [3]
