design stop motion letters No. of Lessons: 5 x doubles Total Time: : 5 hours 30 minutes Group: 1 st years No. of Pupils: 26 Aims: To help pupils to: Plan construction using design processes such as drawing and editing. Understand the editing process i.e. sequencing of ideas Showing good ideas looking at form symmetry and balance. Develop an awareness of layout, font, colour and scale Contour line and explore full shape of their letter in a blimps by overlapping and staggering letters Identify perspective by understanding foreground and background and overlapping techniques Help students understand the process of designing the letter of their name to portray their personality and the key elements of the design process with particular reference to measurement, scale, characters and movement Explore materials and techniques required for making and assembling as a stop frame animation using the letters of their name. To develop skills in constructing their stop motion video incorporating movement in the lettering incorporating imagery text various typography - looking at font, scale, colour and layering materials to create their individualise name. Give relevance to things that are in their lifes that are important by creating letters of importance by making larger font size and incorporating characters. Develop research skills to source images suitable to use in designing the letters of their name To help students comprehend graphic design as a means of visual communication. Develop the relevant vocabulary to describe the elements in the design process they are exploring. Develop analytical drawing skills for moving objects and characters within the lettering Develop an awareness of shape, form and depth. Explore the tools and techniques required for creating a stop motion video. Have an understanding of set design and how to correctly compose and photograph their design. Edit, crop and manipulate their digital images of the stop motion
Overall Learning Outcomes for the Scheme: On completion pupils should be able to: Plan, design, edit and assemble letters and moving props. 2d dimensional graphic design lettering to be incorporated into the stop motion animated clip. Students will complete drawings of their names including elements of their personalities and interests Understand the design process. Construct set design as a backdrop to their stop motion animation Discuss the font, colour , scale, positioning design process and develop an understanding of the key techniques associated with the process. Identify artists that have explored graphic design in particular i.e. Bansky and Sheppard fairy Identify the artists works and be able to use the relevant vocabulary to describe graphic design and stop motion animation. Investigating/Exploring/Creating (include illustrations, especially your own work):
Investigate Students will investigate artists Banksy and Sheppard Fairy Through designing a stop motion clip they will examine sample stop motion you tube clips. They will be looking at various typography, by identifying Font type, Colour, Impact, Size and placement. Explore . Students will explore the visual elements of imagery, text, layout and colour of various graphic design examples assessing how effectively these elements combined to communicate the message they are designed to convey The techniques and processes involved in stop frame animation i.e. photographing, editing, layering cropping, framing, composition and manipulating images. Creating Animated stop motion video incorporating their names and individualising it by adding characters, or props which reflect on their personality Create and make set designs as backdrops to be incorporated in their stop frame clip.

Rachel Rachel Rachel Art History and Critical Contextual Studies Students will identify binary opposites by comparing and contrasting the works of Paul Rand and Bansky Analyse Bauhaus methods by combining imagery and text during creating process Focus on colour and style of artist Shepherd Fairy by examining use of complimentary colour and composition.
To inform students about the History of Bauhaus and the role it plays in Graphic Design. Image on right is a more recent poster design using Bauhaus style and I will show this to illustrate to students how a certain style can be used
ICT: PowerPoint Laptop printer projector, you tube , internet, i motion, movie maker and camera
Key words/phrases: Graphic design, Colour, line, patterns, tone, texture, form , composition shape height depth width, measurement, layout, angles, 3d construction - Stop Motion, edit, framing
Teaching/Learning Strategies:
Introduce students to artists who have created design emphasis being on font, pattern, shapes and textures by showing them imagery and having a discussion in class about the different artists and their styles. A2 Visual aid for students to reference example imagery surrounding colour, layout and typography/ stop motion, photography and editing Demonstration on various types of typography layout and positioning by having examples of various text layouts showing the students how positioning of the text is important. Demonstrate how to transfer text by first creating a baseline on the text by placing their chosen text underneath their template and transferring it onto a template using a light box/ window and pencil. Distribute visual aid on imagery to help students to get some ideas to be encouraging them to be more creative and help with their initial creative process. Demonstrate how to cut-out imagery and typography by gathering students around a table and I will firstly discuss safety precautions surrounding using a scalpel. I will demonstrate how to correctly cut out typography and imagery by rotating the image as I cut. Demonstrate how to create different effects by using layering process I will do this by layering different material over my selected image for example maybe crepe paper. Discuss with students at various stages of the scheme to see what is working and what is not working using students work as an example. I will use a particular students work were they have layered and created a particular aspect of their design of their name that is working well and has consider appropriate font, colour, type, imagery, layout.. Demonstrate to students how to set up camera and tripod to make a Stop Motion Video correctly considering composition, framing, lighting, background, foreground, movement, and timing and how to manipulate all these including their objects cut-outs to help achieve their desire effect. Discuss with students safety precautions surrounding equipment they will be using during this scheme i.e. scissors scalpel, camera , video camera and tripod Conclude the scheme by displaying students work allowing students to view the work of their peers I will do this by placing students work around the art room and allowing students to walk around and view their peers work and students will be given the opportunity to discuss what they learned about graphic design before showing on the projector their final cut stop motion animated video.
Materials:Templates, paper, card, scissors ,scalpel, textured materials , steel rulers , acrylic paint, paintbrushes, magazines, glue, pencils, rulers , light box , colouring pencils, colouring markers, crepe paper, colour card/paper, lettering, cutting mat, shoeboxes, camera , Tripod Blue Card, Backdrops, Video camera, Pencils, Ruler Masking tape, Web cam, (portable) and visual aids. Safety Precaution: Students to follow art cleaning rules and must return material to storage Be careful when handling equipment (digital) No running in classroom Students must follow guidelines for using scissors scalpel (sharp blades) if using blades students are aware of safety precautions to avoid cutting also I will do a demonstration on the handing of blades when cutting.
Differentiation: Adjust scheme to suit individual students learning abilities. For the less able students I will reduce the amount of detail required for them to incorporate into their piece. For those with stronger abilities I will encourage them to add extra detail. Visual aids will be use to reinforce all students learning throughout this scheme. Students who are finding the task difficult will be paired alongside a more competent student. Two students have mild learning difficulties so I will help them during their design process. And put in place the buddy system and paired them with more able students and provide tracing paper and grid system. Visual aids will be put in place to reinforce all students learning.
Timeline/Sequence of Lessons: Week 1 Introduce students to images and artists have a discussion on ideas on what theyre going to make, demonstrate some of the techniques and all students will begin working on their pieces. Graphic design name personality Week 2 Continue working on their pieces students will be looking at visual aid and will be deciding on what they will be incorporating into their finish piece. Demonstrating how to create a stop motion clip. Week 3 Discussing with students what is working and not by displaying student work as an example. Repeat demonstration on how to correctly frame and edit their piece Week 4. Review of work and continuation of editing and set design Week 5 Completing finished pieces students will be displaying their finished piece(s) and helping to edit the final cut Assessment Rubric: Year Group 1 st years
